Roasts from big brands over PlayStation’s all-digital announcement have went viral on social media.
After Sony Interactive Entertainment announced an all-digital future for PlayStation, the company has been catching flak from all sides. Fans and the wider gaming community have voiced strong concerns over the move. While some have debated its implications, others have mocked PlayStation's decision, with several viral posts from major brands piling on.
Domino's and KFC roast PlayStation on social media
Among the barrage of criticism aimed at PlayStation, Domino's made sure they didn't hold back. On X, Domino's UK replied to PlayStation's official announcement revealing that future first-party games would no longer receive physical releases, commenting: “Makes about as much sense as us changing to digital pizzas.” The response quickly went viral, racking up more than 100,000 likes as users joined in mocking PlayStation's decision.
But Domino's didn't stop there. The pizza chain followed up with a satirical "breaking news" announcement graphic, stating:
"In response to trends in the gaming industry, as of 1 April 2027 Domino's UK will cease production of physical pizzas and shift to production of digital pizzas only. Consumers will be able to download our full range of delicious pizza codes and, using the power of imagination, enjoy them in an entirely virtual sense."
In another reply to its own post, Domino's added: "At the same time, our much-loved 'Domin-oh-hoo-hoo' catchphrase will be updated to 'Domin-oh-hoo-whose-dumb-idea-was-this'."
The jokes clearly resonated online, with the post amassing more than 12 million impressions and nearly 500,000 likes. "Is there a DLC for smell too?" one user joked, under the post, as more piled on.
Another fast-food giant soon joined in, with KFC also poking fun at PlayStation's announcement.
"BREAKING NEWS: KFC will stop offering its physical format starting today. Its products can only be consumed through its app in fake PNG format," the brand posted on its official X account. The post has since attracted around 150,000 likes and millions of impressions.
Other influential figures have also chimed in, albeit with less satirical messages. One of them is TV host Trevor Noah, who criticised PlayStation's all-digital move on his X account. He argued that physical media makes gaming more affordable, as players can buy games second-hand or lend discs to friends and family.
He also highlighted concerns over ownership, saying:
"If the media we buy is only digital, it can be taken away from us at a moment's notice with no recourse. Imagine that one day your entire library of games could be deleted overnight because technically you don't own it."
The backlash is hardly surprising. PlayStation's controversial decision to phase out physical game releases and transition to an entirely digital ecosystem will see physical PlayStation game discs officially discontinued from January 2028.
With major brands joining the conversation and widespread criticism continuing across social media, it remains to be seen how Sony will respond in the months ahead.
