The Witcher 4 targets 2028 release window, CD Projekt RED confirms

Ciri's new saga is shaping up to be CD Projekt RED's most ambitious Witcher game yet, with more than 500 developers at work.

The Witcher 4 finally has a target release window, with CD Projekt RED making the announcement on Tuesday (25 August), just a day before Gamescom Opening Night Live. The announcement was made through a short video on the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky accounts:

In the video, CD PROJEKT RED Joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski invited everyone to check out CD Projekt RED’s booth at Gamescom. During Gamescom, the focus will be on The Witcher 3: Wildhunt Songs of the Past DLC. Nowakowski then moved on to talk about The Witcher 4.

“Our team is hard at work on a brand new Saga. One where Ciri is on the helm,” Nowakowski said. He added that more than 500 developers are working on the game, with the team aiming to create something special for players.

“The Witcher 4 features a huge immersive open world, intense and action packed gameplay, and a deep impactful story that will stay with you for a long time,” he continued.

Nowakowski described The Witcher 4 as the studio’s “biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date,” before acknowledging that players are eager to know when it will arrive.

While CD Projekt RED will not be showing The Witcher 4 at Gamescom and is not yet ready to announce an exact release date, Nowakowski did provide a target window.

“I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window,” he said. “I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner,” before asking players to “let the team cook”, adding that “it will be worth the wait.”

What do we know about The Witcher 4 so far?

CD Projekt RED first confirmed The Witcher 4, then called Project Polaris in 2023 during a financial call, but later denied it to the press for a while. The game’s first trailer was then featured during The Game Awards 2024, with a six-minute cinematic that featured the game’s new protagonist, Ciri.

In The Witcher 4, CD Projekt RED has teased that Ciri’s journey towards becoming a Witcher, along with the significance of the Lynx School medallion, will play a central role in the game. The developers have also confirmed that Geralt will appear in the game with a “special role”, although what that entails has been kept under wraps.

Then, in 2025, The Witcher 4 showcased some NPCs, cutscenes and more during Epic’s State of Unreal showcase, which ran on Unreal Engine 5. However, at the time, the developers emphasised that the demo was “not the real gameplay”, but rather just a tech demo.

In the same month, CD Projekt RED confirmed that The Witcher 4 features “console-first development”, saying that the team wanted to start from the PS5 base and expand from there. The developers also noted that they were not going to ignore PC players, as they want to make sure PC gamers get the best experience when the game is released.
