The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a surprise third expansion.
CD PROJEKT RED has officially announced a third expansion coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, entitled Songs of the Past. The new story expansion will bring Geralt of Rivia back to the forefront, as he embarks for an all-new adventure in 2027–12 long years after the game’s original release.
When is The Witcher 3’s new expansion coming out?
Game developer CD PROJEKT RED is returning to the world of The Witcher a tad sooner than expected. This week, rumours of The Witcher 3 getting a third expansion proved startlingly true–the expansion is titled Songs of the Past, and is slated for release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The expansion has not been announced for release on last-gen platforms like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One or Nintendo Switch, where The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also available to play. Additionally, the developer revealed that new content coming to the now 11-year-old game will require updated system requirements “to ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward” which will become effective “starting from the next update.”
What is The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past about?
Songs of the Past will feature Geralt of Rivia returning for a “brand new adventure,” but more details regarding the expansion’s story content have not been detailed just yet. This will be The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s third expansion, following Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016).
The expansion is being developed by CD PROJEKT RED and Fool’s Theory, a game studio that consists of several developers who also worked on The Witcher 3. More details regarding the expansion are set to be revealed in late summer 2026.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will launch sometime in 2027. The next entry in the game franchise, The Witcher IV, does not have a release date yet.
