Activision has confirmed that its next Call of Duty title will leave the PlayStation 4 behind.
Call of Duty developer, Activision, has shut down recent rumours suggesting that the next entry in the franchise is being developed for the ageing PlayStation 4 console, instead confirming a full shift to modern platforms. This marks the first Call of Duty title since 2012's Black Ops II to not launch on the console.
“Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4,” the official X account posted.
This brief statement appears to address a recent rumour claiming that the next Call of Duty–rumoured to be Modern Warfare 4–is being tested on PlayStation 4.
The claim originated from Alaix, a known dataminer, who posted on X that he had heard “MW4 is currently being playtested on PS4”. This quickly sparked concern within the community, with many hoping the next instalment would fully embrace modern technology.
Naturally, developing games across both older and newer generations often introduces technical limitations, as performance and design must accommodate legacy hardware. This is especially relevant given that the PlayStation 4 first launched in 2013, nearly 13 years ago, raising concerns that the franchise’s next entry would be held back in visual fidelity and performance.
With Activision now firmly debunking the rumour, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Some community members have also noted that developers frequently test games on a range of hardware–including older systems–without those platforms necessarily being targeted for release.
Activision’s stance strongly suggests the franchise is moving on from older consoles altogether, likely including the Xbox One, Microsoft’s counterpart to the PS4, which also launched in 2013.
Which platforms will the next Call of Duty title be released on?
Looking ahead, future Call of Duty titles–including the expected Modern Warfare 4–are likely to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with potential support for upcoming next-generation hardware. The rumoured PlayStation 6 and Microsoft’s next console, currently referred to as Project Helix, are expected to arrive around 2027 or 2028.
There is also speculation that the next Call of Duty could make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2, though this is unconfirmed as of now.
