Dungeon Crawler Carl tabletop game crashes crowdfunding goals a day after BackerKit launch

The people want more tabletop games.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl (DCC) fantasy LitRPG (literary role-playing game) book series by Matt Dinniman is getting adaptations left and right. With a live-action TV series confirmed for Peacock, Dungeon Crawler Carl is also making its way into the physical tabletop world, with Renegade Game Studios already seeing success of its crowdfunding campaign.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl campaign has amassed huge support on BackerKit just over a day after launch, raising US$4.3 million against an initial goal of only US$250,000. The campaign has attracted more than 17,000 backers, with 31 days remaining before it ends on 16 May.

We break down the campaign briefly below, but if you do not want to miss any details, visit the BackerKit page, which outlines everything about the upcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl TTRPG, including what the game is about, how to play, exclusive rewards and more.

What is Dungeon Crawler Carl about?

As in the books, Dungeon Crawler Carl is set in a post-invasion world where an ordinary man, Carl, and his cat, Princess Donut, along with the rest of humanity, attempt to survive levels of dungeons filled with monsters, traps and challenges–as part of a survival show designed to entertain an alien audience.

What is in the Dungeon Crawler Carl campaign?

The BackerKit campaign features two tabletop games in a single campaign: the official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG and a single-player version, Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable, which focuses on a co-operative card-crafting deck-builder experience.

In the classic DCC tabletop game, there will be more than 30 playable races and classes, along with subclasses. However, the biggest feature that makes the game even more interesting–and different with every session–is the ability to mix and match elements to create entirely new races and classes, with the studio describing it as offering “nearly infinite character combinations”.

Meanwhile, in the single-player version, Unstoppable, players can “battle neighbourhood, borough and city bosses to prepare for the next floor collapse”. It is a deck-building adventure based on John D. Clair’s hit system, and also supports co-op play with one additional player.

As for how to play, the studio in partnership with Good Time Society has published a 10-minute video tutorial explaining the mechanics of DCC.

For all backer tiers, rewards such as stretch-goal sticker packs, art prints, loot cards and achievement cards will be included. There are also limited exclusives, such as various printed dice bags and an RPG character journal where you can create your crawler’s backstory.

When is Dungeon Crawler Carl releasing?

As the campaign has only just launched and runs until mid-May, there will be a waiting period before players can access the tabletop game.

Renegade Game Studios has highlighted a late October timeline, with the Dungeon Crawler Carl TTRPG expected to complete production and begin distribution around that time.

An early-access digital release has also been teased for the future.
