CD Projekt has announced a long-awaited visual upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro, coming on 8 April.
Since its launch in 2020, PlayStation players have not been able to fully experience Cyberpunk 2077’s crisp, futuristic visuals due to console limitations compared with PC. However, that is about to change, as CD Projekt has announced a free update arriving later today, bringing significant visual enhancements through improved upscaling and ray tracing on the PS5 Pro.
Cyberpunk 2077

Platforms: PC (Windows/macOS), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S
Developer: CD Projekt RED
What upgrades are coming to Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) enhances on-screen visuals using advanced AI upscaling, delivering a sharper and more detailed experience throughout Night City.
The standout feature of this update, however, is the major upgrade to ray tracing. Developers have emphasised the importance of lighting in a game defined by its futuristic, neon-lit aesthetic, and this enhanced implementation aims to bring the world closer to their original artistic vision.
The technicals of it was explained by CD Projekt in the PlayStation Blog post:
“With the PS5 Pro update, we implemented BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) support to enable ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, bringing the visuals even closer to our artistic vision for this world. ”
What are the Cyberpunk 2077 Ray Tracing modes?
The update introduces three graphical modes, allowing players to tailor their experience:
The Ray Tracing Pro gives players the highest setting, enabling full ray tracing across reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and more. This mode targets 30–40 FPS on variable refresh rate displays.
The second option, simply called Ray Tracing Mode, gives you a sweet middle-ground. This mode applies ray tracing to selected elements while maintaining a smoother 60 FPS.
Last is the Performance Mode, which focuses on achieving the highest possible frame rate, ideal for players prioritising smooth gameplay over visual fidelity.
While the update appears promising, player reception to the PSSR-powered enhancements remains to be seen. It is often compared to NVIDIA’s DLSS, the most recent version of which has drawn criticism for its uncanny AI upscaling results.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available in the PlayStation game catalogue following its addition in July 2025, meaning PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can experience the upgraded version at no additional cost.
