The God of War TV series has found a new Kratos.

Amazon’s God of War TV series has officially cast a new actor to star as Kratos: Dave Bautista. Bautista is stepping into the role to replace Ryan Hurst, who has departed the series after suffering from a bicep injury on set.

Variety reports that all scenes featuring Hurst will now be reshot with Bautista in the lead role.

Who is replacing Ryan Hurst as Kratos in the God of War TV series?

The upcoming God of War TV series has officially found its Kratos; again, that is. According to Variety, Amazon Prime Video has cast former wrestler Dave Bautista as Kratos, following reports that the actor had been in talks to join the series’ cast in recent weeks. However, his casting was not confirmed at the time.

Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst in the role of Kratos, after Hurst suffered a debilitating bicep injury on set while filming a stunt. Hurst had reportedly filmed four episodes worth of footage as Kratos, before the injury left him with a lengthy recovery timeline that would have stalled production on the series for months.

Prime Video then reportedly chose to recast the role rather than wait for Hurst to recover, with an expedited casting process to get the series back on track. The streaming service is now looking to get production back up on the series in fall this year, which means that Bautista only has a little time before he will be needed on set.

Bautista is perhaps best known outside of wrestling for starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as Drax the Destroyer. Amazon Prime Video has given the series a two-season order, which means that Bautista will likely have to stay committed to playing Kratos for the long haul.

Callum Vinson is still attached to play Atreus in the series. The series has also cast Ed Skrein to play Baldur, along with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri.

Ronald D. Moore serves as God of War’s showrunner, executive producer, and writer. The series has no release date yet.
