Looking to start a family? How about 1,000 families?
Developer Playground Games showed off a deep dive for its upcoming Fable reboot during today’s Xbox Developer Direct livestream, confirming a release window for the title: Autumn 2026. The game will serve as a full reboot of the Fable franchise, though it looks to remain authentic to the series’ roots–interactable “handcrafted” NPCs, chicken-kicking, British humour, and all.

Fable reboot shows off gameplay, confirms Autumn 2026 launch window
Playground Games has finally shown off more gameplay for the Fable reboot, confirming that the upcoming game is set to fully retain the quirkiness of the original Fable series. During the Xbox Developer Direct, Playground confirmed that “choices and consequences” are a major focus in the upcoming game, encouraging players to progress through the story in any way they choose.
The game’s open world includes locations like the city of Bowerstone, a city filled with lifelike NPC characters. These NPCs will continuously go about their own routines, and react appropriately to the player depending on what they choose to do in the story. For example, players will be able to buy up houses, become a landlord, and evict villagers, causing them to ultimately resent the player. Alternatively, they can choose to set up businesses and hire villagers as their employees.
There are over 1,000 unique NPCs scattered across the game’s setting of Albion, and players can go so far as to marry and start families with any of them. In fact, the option is available for players to marry and have children with all of them, though Playground told IGN that “it'll be a bit of work.”
Players will also be able to create their own characters, furthering the RPG fantasy Playground is looking to achieve with this reboot. The game’s combat features a mix of melee, ranged, and magic attacks. While fighting enemies, players will be able to seamlessly swap between each fighting style, going from striking with a sword to hurling a fireball without delay.
Even simple actions like choosing to kill a giant named Dave–specifically, the one seen in Fable’s earlier marketing material–can cause the nearby town to hate the player, as his massive corpse will remain strewn over the farmland, causing house prices to fall. The townsfolk will think poorly of the player for this, even if they felt it was the right thing to do narratively.
Fable is set to launch in Autumn 2026.
