CD Projekt co-founder Michal Kiciński acquires 100% ownership of DRM-free games store GOG

CD Projekt’s co-founder Michal Kiciński now owns GOG.

DRM-free digital games store GOG is officially changing hands. The platform, which was originally owned by CD Projekt subsidiary Sp.z.o.o., is now 100% owned by one of CD Projekt’s co-founders Michał Kiciński.

Kiciński was also one of GOG’s original co-founders. Under its new ownership, the platform is said to “continue to operate independently, supporting gamers and developers through its DRM-free philosophy,” according to a news release from CD Projekt.

GOG comes under new ownership, after being purchased from CD Projekt

The video game storefront GOG is now coming under new ownership. This week, CD Projekt confirmed that one of its original co-founders, Michał Kiciński had acquired 100% ownership of GOG. The storefront had also been co-founded by Kiciński back in 2008, bringing things full circle for the company.

In a statement, Kiciński said:

“[...] CD PROJEKT and GOG share the same roots and values: freedom, independence, and a genuine sense of ownership. I believe that CD PROJEKT, with its exceptional AAA games, will stand, as always, behind the GOG offering–making GOG the best place on the planet to purchase The Witcher and Cyberpunk games, both existing titles and the new ones we all anticipate so much.”

He continued: “Beyond preserving classics, GOG has always sought out new games with a retro spirit. I am personally involved in the development of a few games like that and they will certainly make their strong appearance on GOG in 2026.”

Michal Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt, also commented on GOG’s departure from the company, saying:

“With our focus now fully on an ambitious development roadmap and expanding our franchises with new high-quality products, we felt this was the right time for this move. For a long time now, GOG has been operating independently. Now it’s going into very good hands–we are convinced that with the support of Michał Kiciński, one of GOG’s co-founders, its future will be full of great projects and successes. We would like to thank the GOG team for years of fruitful cooperation and wish them all the best. And to the GOG community, I say ‘see you around’, because our upcoming releases will naturally be available on GOG as well.”

GOG has also signed a distribution agreement with CD Projekt as part of the acquisition deal. The deal puts into place a plan for all of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming games to be released on GOG. That includes upcoming sequels from the renowned game developer, like The Witcher IV and Cyberpunk 2077's successor.
