Magic the Gathering's Monster Hunter collaboration delayed following backlash, rework coming in 2026

A rare move from Wizards has put the high-profile crossover with one of Capcom's biggest IPs back on the drawing board.

Wizards of the Coast have hit the brakes on what should have been one of their biggest end-of-year crossovers. Just days after its reveal, the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop has been pulled entirely, following widespread backlash from players who felt the collaboration missed the mark in almost every direction.

What was meant to be a celebration of Capcom’s iconic hunting franchise has instead turned into an unexpected flashpoint, and a rare moment where Wizards has openly admitted to getting it wrong.

The Superdrop, initially slated for release on 1 December, was unveiled last week to an immediate wave of criticism. Long-time Monster Hunter fans questioned everything from card choices to misspelling names, and even the lack of mechanics that capture the spirit of the series.

By the time Wizards published their statement on 26 November, the verdict was already clear: players weren’t just underwhelmed; they were disappointed.

In the press release, Wizards didn’t hold back: “We heard loud and clear that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better… we missed the mark on elements like card selection and faithfully integrating the world and mechanics of Monster Hunter.”

The company confirmed it would postpone the entire release, rebuild the Superdrop from the ground up, and return with new details in 2026. Capcom, according to Wizards, is fully supportive of taking another swing.

Full Monster Hunter Secret Lair Superdrop rework now underway

Secret Lair delays do happen, but they are usually tied to production or manufacturing issues. In this case, the postponement stems from concerns about the creative execution of the crossover, making it a notably different situation for the line.

Players had flagged several problems almost immediately. The Superdrop included misspelled card names, relied entirely on reprints rather than offering new designs, and it omitted equipment cards, a core element of Monster Hunter’s identity. Without mechanics referencing crafting, weapon progression, or the structure of hunts, many argued the set resembled a Monster Hunter-themed reskin more than a fully realised collaboration.

Rebuilding an entire Secret Lair from scratch is a significant step, and Wizards noted that reconstructing the set, rather than correcting isolated errors, is not something they intend to do often. However, they said that they were “committed to doing better.” On top of that, they reassured Monster Hunter fans that “Capcom is on board for us to take another swing at this Superdrop as well.”

For now, the Monster Hunter Superdrop has been removed from the release schedule, with a revised launch window expected in 2026. Wizards and Capcom plan to share updated details in the coming months as development continues.
