Ubisoft and FX are making a Far Cry TV series with Fargo and Always Sunny creators

Is this the definition of insanity?

Ubisoft and FX are officially making a TV series adaptation of the Far Cry game franchise. Noah Hawley (Fargo, Alien: Earth) and Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Welcome to Wrexham) will co-create the series, with the latter also set to have a starring role.

Much like the game franchise, the Far Cry series is set to have an anthology format, featuring different casts and locales each season.

Far Cry TV show is in development at FX

FX Networks, an American media company and subsidiary of Disney, is officially teaming up with game publisher Ubisoft to produce a Far Cry TV series. The TV series will stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, much like other FX-produced projects, such as the likes of The Bear and Alien: Earth.

Story details for the Far Cry TV series have not been made public as of yet, but the adaptation is confirmed to follow an anthology format, much like its source material. Each season will rotate in a new setting and cast, though it’s unclear if they will specifically adapt all six mainline games in the Far Cry series, or follow original storylines.

Rob Mac will co-create the series, marking another collaboration with Ubisoft following the two’s previous partnership on the Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest. Noah Hawley will also co-create the series, returning to a long-time collaboration with FX, which has spawned multiple TV projects including Fargo, Alien: Earth, and Legion.

According to Variety, Rob Mac is also set to star in the Far Cry series’ debut season. Mac said:

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

Hawley added:

“What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

The last mainline installment in the Far Cry game franchise was 2021’s Far Cry 6, which starred Giancarlo Esposito as a ruthless fascist dictator in the island of Yara. A new game in the franchise has not been announced yet.
