Udo Kier was set to star in Kojima Productions’ upcoming video game OD.
Udo Kier, a German actor who has starred in video games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Call of Duty: WWII, and Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror game OD, has died. His partner Delbert McBride shared the news via Variety, confirming that Kier had passed away on Sunday morning (23 November) at the age of 81.
Udo Kier passes away, leaving behind a storied acting career
Udo Kier has had a prolific career as an actor, appearing in more than 200 movies to date. The character actor has worked with creatives like Werner Herzog, Andy Warhol, and Lars von Trier. He is perhaps most well-known for working in creature features like Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Modern Vampires (1998).
Kier is also well-known in the gaming sphere for a number of starring roles in video games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Command & Conquer: Yuri’s Revenge. He played Yuri in both games via live-action cutscenes. He also starred as Dr. Peter Straub in Call of Duty: WWII, and voiced Erich in 2022’s Martha is Dead.
Kier is also set to star in OD, an upcoming horror game directed by Hideo Kojima. Kier was announced to be one of the game’s cast members upon the project’s reveal in 2023, though the nature of his role was not stated at the time.
Kojima took to Twitter/X to eulogise the actor today, saying:
I’m at a loss for words. It all happened far too suddenly.
Because of the strike, we weren’t able to shoot “OD” for a long time, and we were forced to reschedule to next year. Even during that time, Udo and I exchanged emails frequently. We stayed in close contact. When we met in Milan at the end of September, he told me how much he was looking forward to the shoot starting up again next year. He was full of energy then too, making me laugh with his usual “Udo-isms.”
I still can’t believe this.
Udo wasn’t just an actor. He was truly an “icon” of his time. We’ve lost a great “icon.” There will never be another like him.
Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.
Kier also starred in video game adaptations like Far Cry (2008) and BloodRayne (2005) as Dr. Lucas Krieger and Regal Monk, respectively. OD will possibly be his final role, as the game is still in development and does not have a release date yet.
