The Witcher 3 cross-platform launch delayed to 2026

The Witcher 3 modding community will have to wait a little longer.

The developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red, have announced a delay to the launch of cross-platform mod support. Initially revealed in May as “one more patch” for the year, the update was expected to roll out toward the end of 2025. However, CD Projekt Red have now confirmed that the release has been rescheduled to 2026.

No specific reason for the delay was disclosed. It’s possible the development team is implementing additional upgrades or features, but it’s more likely that the cross-platform integration is simply taking longer than originally estimated.

More modding improvements for The Witcher 3

In May, CD Projekt Red expressed their desire to make mod creation and usage more accessible for players across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

While modding is often overlooked in mainstream gaming discussions, it has played a vital role in the growth and longevity of many games. CD Projekt is committed to reinforcing this aspect of The Witcher 3 by enabling cross-platform mod support through mod.io.

This initiative follows the release of REDKit in the May 2024 update–a powerful and improved modding tool that builds on the earlier MODKit. To access cross-platform mods, players will need to link their mod.io account with their CD Projekt Red account.

While the new system will allow a broader range of mods to be available across platforms, CD Projekt has clarified that console mods will be subject to limitations due to “specific content guidelines and platform selection criteria.” All mods published via mod.io must comply with both its Fan Content Guidelines and User Agreement.

The developers have promised to share more details as the cross-platform mod support release draws closer.

While CD Projekt is focused on developing The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, the studio remains committed to improving Geralt’s world. This latest mod update comes on the heels of a major milestone as The Witcher 3 surpasses 60 million copies sold, an impressive feat for a decade-old game. The title remains popular in today’s gaming landscape, and more updates are likely to follow.
