Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Game developer Gearbox Software has confirmed that Borderlands 4 is also suffering from performance problems on console, following widespread reports of its performance woes on PC platforms. According to company head Randy Pitchford, the game has a “known issue” of PlayStation 5 Pro performance worsening after hours of continuous play.
His suggested fix? “Quit game and restart.”
Borderlands 4 players experience performance issues on PlayStation 5 Pro
If you’ve been playing Borderlands 4 on consoles and noticed performance woes, don’t worry–Gearbox is well aware of the problem, though a fix might be out of reach for now. Players online have noted that the game suffers from framerate drops and stuttering after lengthy gameplay sessions since launch.
Some have speculated the issue to originate from a memory leak, but Gearbox has not confirmed as much yet. When asked about the problem, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford confirmed on Twitter/X that there was a “Known issue of perf dropping on PS5 pro after several hours of continuous play.”
He added: “Workaround until we patch: Quit game and restart. Sorry for the friction!” The issue doesn’t seem to be specific to the PlayStation 5 Pro or individual performance mode, suggesting that all console users are suffering from framerate drops during long playthroughs.
As Pitchford states, the only workaround console players have right now is to restart the game whenever they encounter framerate drops or performance issues. PC players are faring no better, experiencing gameplay stutters, framerate drops, and other technical issues related to inefficient graphics settings.
Gearbox is now looking to add a few highly-requested features to the game. On Twitter/X, the developer confirmed that it’s rolling out another update to improve “stability and performance” on PC today (18 September, 2025). Additionally, a field-of-view slider is in the works for consoles.
