FromSoftware delayed Elden Ring Nightreign’s 1.02 patch after tsunami warnings were issued; waves later hit Japan following a massive 8.8 quake near Russia.
FromSoftware has announced a sudden delay to Elden Ring: Nightreign’s upcoming patch 1.02 following a powerful earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula that triggered widespread tsunami alerts.
Originally scheduled for 31 July, the patch was set to introduce the long-awaited Duos mode alongside new balance adjustments. However, in a statement posted on X, the studio confirmed that the release has been postponed out of safety concerns. "Due to the tsunami warning following the earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula, we have decided to postpone the distribution of the Elden Ring: Nightreign patch 1.02," reads the announcement.
The delay also affects the launch of Everdark Sovereign’s second cycle, which was meant to begin at 03:00 CEST / 18:00 PDT on 30 July. This in-game event will now take place after the patch has been rolled out. FromSoftware added “Thank you for your understanding” in a follow-up post.
Earthquake triggers evacuation across Japan’s eastern coast
The decision follows one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, a shallow 8.8 magnitude quake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula today (30 July).
Tsunami waves have already hit Japan’s coastline, with reports confirming waves of up to 3 metres reaching areas such as Hanasaki Port in Hokkaido. According to The Guardian, more than 900,000 residents across 133 municipalities have been ordered to evacuate as a precaution.
Footage of the tsunami reaching parts of Japan’s coastline has already surfaced, showing the severity of the impact:
No new release time has been confirmed for patch 1.02 or the Everdark Sovereign event. FromSoftware is expected to provide further updates once the situation stabilises.
