Anthem will be removed from the EA Play library on 15 August, ahead of its full server shutdown in January 2026.
BioWare’s online action-RPG Anthem will officially shut down its servers on 12 January, 2026, marking the end of the live service title nearly seven years after launch. This was announced in the Electronic Arts' official website on 3 July.
In a message to players, the development team said: “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.”
The post also added: “We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that.” The team also clarified that this decision has not resulted in any layoffs at BioWare.
Anthem servers going offline in January 2026
BioWare confirmed that once the servers are shut down, Anthem will no longer be accessible, as the game was designed to be online-only. Those who already own the game can continue to re-download and play it until the shutdown date, but purchases and premium currency transactions have now been disabled.
“You can still use any in-game premium currency that you currently have until the game is sunset on January 12, 2026,” the FAQ reads. In addition, Anthem will be removed from the EA Play library on 15 August.
Anthem was originally released in February 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, the game featured co-op missions and customisable exosuits known as Javelins, set on a mysterious alien world.
Following its launch, BioWare announced in 2020 that it would work on a long-term redesign, dubbed Anthem NEXT, in an effort to improve the game’s core systems. However, that update was ultimately cancelled in February 2021.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT),” then-executive producer Christian Dailey said at the time.
With its servers now scheduled to go offline in early 2026, Anthem enters its final months of availability. Players can continue to access the game until January, while using any remaining premium currency they have.
