While players wait for FromSoftware to work on duo support, a modder stepped up and offered a fix over the weekend of Elden Ring: Nightreign's launch.
Elden Ring: Nightreign launched with a strong multiplayer emphasis—but only in threes. Players quickly discovered that the new mode didn’t support duos, leaving them to either queue solo and match with random teammates or coordinate a full three-person group. This limitation drew immediate criticism, with many noting the absence of a two-player option as a frustrating oversight.
Despite early praise for the game's scale and ambition, negative reviews flooded in on launch day. And while FromSoftware has admitted to this oversight, they said in an interview through IGN that the team will look into including this in future updates.
Duo Mode Mod Released by Luke Yui
Over the same weekend, modder Luke Yui, best known for creating Elden Ring’s Seamless Co-op and Sekiro’s co-op mod, released a working mod that adds two-player support to Nightreign.
The mod circumvents the three-player fireteam requirement, allowing friends to experience the game as a duo.modes, this mod will be available in this state,” Yui explained on his Nexus Mods page (via Gamespot). He also noted that players won’t risk a ban unless they modify the files to connect with vanilla users. However, he cautioned that the mod hasn’t been tested for compatibility with other mods yet.
While official duo support remains unconfirmed, this quick workaround offers a much-requested option for players who want to enjoy Nightreign without relying on full trios or random matchmaking.
At the same time, FromSoftware is working on improving the solo experience. In a post on the official Elden Ring X (formerly Twitter) account, the studio announced Patch 1.02 will arrive in the first week of June, including “several bug fixes as well as improvements for solo expeditions.”
Nightreign, which shifts Elden Ring’s focus toward cooperative and competitive multiplayer, takes place in a transformed version of Limveld, the starting zone from the original game. It introduces three-day expeditions where players become Nightfarers, hunting down Nightlords through escalating encounters, culminating in a final boss battle.
Despite the rocky start, Nightreign reached over 300,000 concurrent players within its first hour. And with modders like Yui stepping in early, it’s clear that the community is already shaping the way forward.
