This week, it's all about tornadoes, dungeons and turtle power.
It's the middle of July, and we have had an eventful weekend to say the least. When online discourse wasn't centered over Genshin Impact's ongoing problem with colourism, it's been stuck on the new Captain America: Brave New World trailer and a massive 1.1TB Disney leak. There's a lot going on in the world of entertainment, but if you just want to focus on new games to play and TV shows to watch - we've got you.
Here's what we're checking out this week.
What we're playing this week
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is a roguelike launching on the Nintendo Switch on July 17, tasking players with rescuing Master Splinter from the Foot Clan. As mysterious portals appear all over New York, the turtles will have to make dungeon runs as they fight to get their dad back.
On July 18, we’re getting Dungeons of Hinterberg. This charming-looking game has you play as Luisa, a law trainee who visits Hinterberg while on vacation. However, Hinterberg isn’t your typical tourist hotspot- it’s filled with dungeons and adventures to be had, giving Luisa plenty to do when she isn’t forging new friendships with the locals.
On July 19, Capcom is launching Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, an intriguing fresh IP that takes players to a fantastical mountain that needs supernatural protection. The game’s day-night cycle will have players purify villages during the day, and protect them from hordes of monsters in the nighttime.
What we're watching this week
Good news: Cobra Kai is back for its sixth and final season! Bad news: we're only getting five episodes this week, as Netflix has opted to split the 15-episode long season into three release batches. Season 6 Part 1 debuts on July 18, bringing the cast back together as they train for an all-important karate tournament.
On July 18, Kite Man: Hell Yeah! spins out of the DC Comics animated series Harley Quinn, following Poison Ivy’s ex-fiance Kite Man. His whole thing is that he flies around as a kite, so that should give you some idea of what to expect here. The series follows Kite Man and his girlfriend Golden Glider as they get into various hijinks while managing a seedy dive bar in Gotham City. One of those hijinks? Getting involved with Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom.
Also this week: Minari director Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters, a standalone sequel to the 1996 movie Twister, hits theaters. This time around, Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) heads to the open plains with her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test out a groundbreaking new way to track tornadoes. There, she runs into charming but reckless Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). He has ambitions of his own, but their friendly competition turns into a battle of survival amidst a rapid tornado outbreak.
Twisters feels like an ensemble piece in the same vein as the original 1996 movie, filled with enough blockbuster spectacle and up-and-coming talent to keep this disaster flick afloat. I was surprised at how good it was, personally, but there’s always Longlegs if you’d rather go for something a little more scary this week!
