Team Spirit knock out Team Liquid to advance to lower bracket semifinals at The International 2026

Team Spirit need one more victory to survive to the final day of The International 2026.

The penultimate day of The International (TI) 2026 on Saturday (22 August) kicked off with a clash between former TI champions in the lower bracket quarterfinals. TI 2021 and TI 2023 champions Team Spirit defeated TI 2024 champions Team Liquid to keep their hopes for a historic third Aegis of Champions alive.

With their victory, Spirit have guaranteed themselves at least a 4th place finish as well as an estimated US$195,425 in winnings. Spirit now advance to the lower bracket semifinals, where they will face the winner of the other lower bracket quarterfinal between Nigma Galaxy and BoomBoys (aka BetBoom Team) to close out the day. Victory there will earn Spirit a spot in the lower bracket finals in the final day of TI 2026.

Meanwhile, Liquid end their run at TI 2026 in 5th-6th place and will go home with an estimated US$162,832 in consolation. While this result is an improvement on their 9th-13th place finish in last year's tournament, it's still a disappointment for the team as they fall well short of claiming a third Aegis of Champions for the organisation.

How Team Spirit and Team Liquid ended up in the lower bracket quarterfinals at TI 2026

Spirit were seen as solid contenders ahead of TI 2026, though expectations for the team began to rise after their strong start in the Group Stage. They kicked off their campaign by scoring back-to-back sweeps over China's Xtreme Gaming and fellow Eastern European squad Aurora Gaming in the first two rounds. Spirit then had their first encounter with Liquid in Round 3, where they emerged victorious in three games to get in position for a direct berth to the Playoffs in the next round.

Spirit faced overwhelming tournament favourites TEAM VISION (aka PARIVISION) in Round 4, where VISION handed Spirit their first loss of the tournament to become the first team to advance directly to the Playoffs. Spirit had another shot at skipping the Elimination Stage in Round 5, but they fell victim to an upset at the hands of Nigma Galaxy and had to play one more match to secure their spot in the main event. Spirit defeated China's Team Resilience in the Elimination Stage to finally make the Playoffs in their third attempt.

Meanwhile, Liquid entered TI 2026 with momentum behind them after they won 1win Essence II a week before the tournament kicked off. Liquid also had a hot start to the Group Stage, taking down China's Vici Gaming in Round 1 and Eastern European powerhouse Team Yandex in Round 2.

After losing to Spirit in Round 3, Liquid were quick to bounce back in the next round by defeating regional rivals Iron Wing (aka 1w Team). And in the final round of the Group Stage, Liquid pulled off a reverse sweep against another Eastern European in Aurora Gaming to advance directly to the Playoffs.

The opening day of the Playoffs then saw Spirit sweep Iron Wing to advance to the upper bracket semifinals while Liquid were swept by Yandex to drop down to the lower bracket. And in the second day of the main event, Spirit fell to VISION in three games to get sent to the lower bracket while Liquid knocked out defending champions Team Falcons to keep their title hopes alive.

Team Spirit sweep Team Liquid out of The International 2026

Spirit opened the series with a fast-paced draft headlined by Nature's Prophet for Yatoro, Pangolier for Larl, and Centaur Warrunner for Collapse. Not me on Shadow Demon and rue on Winter Wyvern provided much-needed crowd control and save abilities to round out the lineup.

Liquid responded with a lineup with tons of burst damage output, albeit one that takes a while to come online. MiCKe had Shadow Fiend, Nisha was given Invoker, Ace got Timbersaw, Boxi was put on Dark Willow, and tofu picked Mirana.

Spirit were aggressive from the get-go to great success, scoring seven kills on Liquid's cores in the first 21 minutes to severely hamper their progression. With Liquid still trying to catch up, Spirit only continued dominating through the mid game and were virtually unchallenged in the head-on clashes. And while Liquid still managed to put up a stubborn defense of their base, Spirit still comfortably secured their first win of the series after 49 minutes.

In game two, Spirit looked to close out the series sweep with a hard-hitting draft headlined by Yatoro's signature Terrorblade pick. Larl on Lina acted as a secondary carry, Collapse on Centaur Warrunner manned the front lines, while not me on Clockwerk and rue on Hoodwink provided additional initiation and crowd control abilities.

Liquid looked to match Spirit's tempo in the mid game with a high-tempo lineup of their own, featuring miCKe on Tiny, Nisha on Puck, Ace on a rare Lycan pick, Boxi on Windranger, and tOfu on Mirana.

Spirit once again identified the laning stage as the glaring weakness in Liquid's draft and went on the offensive early on as a result. Boxi was notably on the receiving end of Spirit's ire, suffering seven deaths in the first 21 minutes of the game. Even so, Liquid still put up a worthy fight in the mid game and even denied an attempt by their opponents to steal the Aegis of the Immortal away at the 24-minute mark. But Spirit's relentless pressure proved to be too much in the end, as they ended Liquid's run in TI 2026 after 43 minutes.

Larl led the way for Spirit in the closeout game with 10 kills and 10 assists on just one death out of his team's 31-18 kill lead. Collapse added seven kills and nine assists on one death while Yatoro had six kills and 11 assists on three deaths.

What is The International 2026?

TI 2026 will be this year's iteration of Dota 2's annual world championship tournament, taking place in August in Shanghai, China. As with previous iterations of the tournament, TI 2026 will feature a total of 16 teams that earn their spots in the tournament by receiving direct invites or earning slots through regional qualifiers.

The list of directly-invited teams to TI 2026 include Aurora Gaming, BoomBoys (aka BetBoom Team), Team Falcons, Team Liquid, Iron Wing (aka 1w Team), Xtreme Gaming, and Team Yandex. Meanwhile, the teams that earned their spots through the regional qualifiers include European qualifier winners Team Spirit, TEAM VISION (aka PARIVISION), HULIGANI, and Nigma Galaxy, North American qualifier winner GamerLegion, Southeast Asian qualifier winner OG, South American qualifier winner LGD Gaming, as well as Chinese qualifier winners Vici Gaming and Team Resilience.

TI 2026's main event will be hosted in the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. Valve first announced that Shanghai will host TI 2026 during last year's world championship tournament, where Team Falcons claimed the Aegis of Champions after defeating China's Xtreme Gaming in the five-game grand finals.

This will mark the second time that Shanghai will host TI after TI 2019, where Western Europe's OG became the first-ever two-time TI champions after defeating Team Liquid in four games to claim the grand prize of US$15.6 million, out of the US$34.3 million prize pool.

TI 2026 will be split into two phases: the ‘Road to The International’ and ‘The International’ main event. The Road to The International will be a Swiss-style Group Stage from 13 to 16 August, where the 16 teams will be cut down to the final eight that will play in the game's biggest stage from 20 to 23 August in Shanghai's Oriental Sports Center.

TI 2026's prize pool follows that of previous editions, with a US$1.6 million base prize pool that will then be boosted through sales of the TI 2026 Compendium.
