The first day of the TI7 open qualifiers has come to an end. Sixteen teams from EU, CIS, NA, SA and SEA are still standing and ready to engage in the home stretch of the battle for a highly coveted regional qualifier spot.
The first day of the open qualifiers is always like opening the flood gates to a dam. Thousands of teams and players surge through the game client and FaceIT platform, embarking on journey many hope will change their lives. Many come knocking on the door of opportunity, others come to challenge themselves and even more come to have fun. In CIS regional alone, 1024 teams signed up to participate in the event - a record unto its own.
Sixteen teams in each of the regions are now lying in wait, devising strategies and preparing for the final run. A select few teams will reach the regional qualifiers by the end of their day.
China is one day behind and is beginning their first steps into the open qualifiers now.
SEA sweet sixteen
Having a recent change in roster WG.Unity was forced to give up their place in the regionals and thrust into the open qualifiers at the last minute. The team has faired well, as expected and will continue to try to regain their position in the regionals. Execration, The Mongolz and Gse7en are all in the running still and are not expected to give up without a fight.
EU sweet sixteen
Henrik "AdmiralBulldog" Ahnberg's sub-stack named Tea Eye Winners were eliminated in Round of 32 by Team Moriarty from Romania. Still in the running is Cool Beans (AllFam) - a creation of Jonathan 'Loda' Berg fully stacked group, EPG and Planet Dog who will next face off against Tuho - the Pittner "bOne7" Armand and Max "qojqva" Bröcker stack who had knocked out Mihai "canceL^^" Antonio last night.
CIS sweet sixteen
Niklas "Wagamama" Högström's run with EPICENTER RU casting team - KBU was cut short after losing to a 7.5k Russian stack. Remaining are still known regional teams such as Cascade, INXY.GG and Double Dimension. The frontrunner of this group is still expected to be recently formed M19 featuring Gleb " Funn1k " Lipatnikov
SA sweet sixteen
Standing strong continues to be Union Gaming Boliva, Unknown who had recently changed out some players and had reportedly disbanded and Midas Club Elite. Although the region is relatively small, it does boast as many registered participants as SEA and more than North America. The players in this region are on cruise control for the most part - being awarded a whopping SEVEN qualifier spots between the two open qualifiers.
NA sweet sixteen
The region with the least amount of teams participating had a relatively quiet and expected night. The region's most watched and hyped team is Vegetable Esports Club - the infamous casting squad featuring Ben "Merlini" Wu and Ioannis "Fogged" Loucas who were both part of the EPICENTER Filler Pick team. Last season, Vegetable Esports Club took the regional spot for the qualifiers but forfeited their place due to conflicts with casting responsibilities. The decision caused an outcry and vocal debate about fairness to other teams and sportsmanship. Once again, the team will be hard pressed to make the same decision as they are one of the frontrunners in the event. The other big name contender is BORSTER consisting of Peter "ppd" Dager.
