World Electronic Sports Games 2017 Day One Recap

Today saw the first day of the group stages at the World Electronic Sports Games get under way. With twenty four teams and four groups, day one would see a lot of games and many teams showing their strength.

Group A

To.be.or.not.to.be and MVP Revolution (ex-NoLifer5.Reborn) took the top two spots in Group A, as they both won two of their series and drew one. Team Dilecom rounded up the top three with five points while Horde are still in the running for a top three finish on three points. The bottom two positions in the group, T Show and Bravado Gaming look almost certain to be eliminated with Bravado winning none of their games and coming in with zero points.

Group B

Cloud 9 took most of the spoils in Group B, with the ex-The Imperial/Danish Bears team claiming seven points from their three games today. SG e-sports and Fantastic Five also made a good showing, finishing the day second and third with five and four points respectively. While Team Romania see themselves in the bottom three, they too have four points and could make their way through into the play-off stage. But Group B is the closest group at the moment with fifth place also having three points while Vultur look fairly weak on one point. This will definitely be a group to pay attention to come tomorrow’s final few games as those top three positions will be highly contested.

Group C

Group C saw the likes of Alliance and DuoBao Young dominating, alongside Aboshamalah. All three of these teams found themselves taking both games in each of their best of two series. This puts them at a six point lead over the other three teams sitting on zero points. It will be very tough for the bottom teams to make up this and save themselves from elimination in the culmination of the group stages tomorrow.

Group D

With Max.Y taking Group D by storm, winning both their series, the same cannot be said for Team Ukraine who were seemingly favourites to win the group. However, with three teams sitting at three points, all hope is not lost for those teams to make it through into the play-off stage. Unfortunately for Signature.Trust and Comanche things look fairly difficult as they sit at the bottom of the group on one point apiece.

The current group standings are as follows:

Tomorrow we will witness the culmination of the group stages and see which teams make it through into the play-off stage. With the top team of each group going directly through to the quarter-finals, the second and third place in each group will have to fight it out with the loser being eliminated. Unfortunately for the bottom three teams in each group, they will be eliminated - so tomorrow will get very interesting.
