The Arcana Showdown:The final eight

This week, we take a look at the heroes who have made it to the final eight of the Arcana Showdown 2016.

Last week, we did a column on the top sixteen of the arcana showdown. This week, the list was halved, with the Battle Pass owners having voted for eight heroes to advance. Slark and Ember Spirit seized the closest victories being only over a million votes over their opponents. Yet, the most exciting contest was that between Io and Queen of Pain, who also happened to be last year’s semi-finalist. Pledging to #MakeWispGreatAgain, the community gave Wisp a whooping ten million votes compared to the mere two and a half million received by the Queen. The King, however, was able to make it through rather easily, having about double the votes of his opponent - Tinker.

The community’s affection towards Io seems to be rapidly increasing, as after winning the vote against the famous Invoker, he was favored over Queen of Pain as well, winning the vote quite marginally.Yet the source of all these votes for Io remains a mystery. Although he is a hero that is frequently seen in the competitive scene and a hot favorite for most professional teams, he is the third least played hero in public games. This may be due to the fact that he is generally considered among the more difficult heroes to play.

Last year, the spots for the quarterfinals were secured by Sniper, Queen of Pain, Invoker, Juggernaut, Slark, Tiny, Storm Spirit and Zeus. Only two of last year’s quarterfinalists - Juggernaut and Slark - are present in this year’s vote, with the rest having already been eliminated. It is rather interesting to compare the results of previous Arcana votes too, seeing how the community’s choices differ from year to year and across different patches. Oddly enough, it should be noticed that while he made it to the top eight last year, Sniper couldn’t even make it past the very first round this year.

The results at the end of this week would be much awaited, as they would decide the semi-finalists of the arcana vote. This means that in less than two weeks, the community will already have voted for the hero that would be getting the arcana this year and maybe even a possible remodel, although the winner of the grand finals will be revealed at TI. Will Io be able to triumph through and keep the support players’ dream alive? Or will the Arcana be handed over to the One True King? Only time will tell!
