ChuaN: "Our support play is our biggest weakness"

The Malaysian superstar Wong 'ChuaN' Hock Chuan sat down with Esports Magazine for a short but informative interview. Through his answers, ChuaN talks about the new Invictus Gaming roster, his role in the team and his expectations for the new year.

Interview conducted by Esports Magazine on March 11th 2015.

"We were able to get a few wonderful players during the transfer window.  Along with my teammates, we hope to achieve desirable results in the new year." - ChuaN

Esports Magazine:  During the Chinese New Year you were able to return to Malaysia to spend time with family and friends.  How was your break and do you have anything interesting to share with your fans?

ChuaN: Nothing especially interesting. There were about 10 plus friend who went to each other's house to wish our families happy New Year.  The internet was not cooperating so we couldn't play DOTA2. I could only sneak out to PC cafe to play DOTA when my friends went home.

Esports Magazine: After the break, the official transfer period started in China.  During this transfer window IG was able to bring in BurNIng and Faith.  What do you think about those two transfers?

ChuaN: BurNing's arrival and Faith's return strengthened our team's weakness.  Their presence raised our overall team strength. Those two transfers were wonderful!

Esports Magazine: In your other interviews, you alluded to the idea that Faith was one of the best support players and BurNIng is the player you wanted to team up with the most.  Now both players are in IG, are you satisfied?

ChuaN: Faith was my old teammate. We are good friends in life. We also have great in-game chemistry.  I just have a level of comfort when teamed up with him.  Although I have never been on the same team with BurNIng, but there isn't much needs to be said about his ability.  I appreciate his style of play and I hope to win THE championship with him.

Esports Magazine: It is well known that BurNIng retired post TI4, what did IG do to convince him to return and join IG?

ChuaN: I am not sure about the details, but I think it has something to do with the fact that we have a "genius teenage girl", a "Malaysian Python", and a principle who wouldn't take no for an answer.

Esports Magazine: With the arrival of new talents also leads to the departure of old friends.  June and Chisbug left IG.  How do you judge their performance during their time at IG?

ChuaN: I am truly thankful for their efforts while playing for IG. They were hard working and played well for the team. It was only that we had issues playing as a team. They were not able to play to their fullest potential as part of our team.

Esports Magazine: June's departure was especially surprising.  He was very young and played better and better as the year progressed.  Why would IG give up on a player like him?

ChuaN: Rosters change is a team decision. Therefore it is not that IG had given up on him. Like I said earlier, it was more of his playing style not well suited to our team's play.

Esports Magazine: June posted on Weibo that he left IG, however Chisbug never officially said that he left.  Will Chisbug go back to his previous role of a substitute player?

ChuaN: Chisbug should remain with IG and become our Statistician. This is something we are truly lacking.

Esports Magazine: After IG's lined up was released, everyone thinks highly of your new lined up.  They all have high hopes for you guys at TI5.  What is your expectation of this new team?

ChuaN: To be honest, I have been a pro for a long time. I have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.   If we are taking about expectations, then in 2015, I only wish to achieve the results I sat out to achieve.  I want to play without regrets.

Esports Magazine: Although you guys have a strong lined up, many are worried that your team lack a true field general.  Who is going to be your in game shot collar?

ChuaN: DOTA is a team game.  There is not one commander that dictates the flow of a game from the beginning to the end.  Usually, during the early stages the supports called the shots; during the mid game, mid or offlaner call the shots; during the late game the carry call the shots.

Esports Magazine: You have been with IG since 2011.  You are one of the original members of IG.  You have experienced many ups and downs.  According to you, how does this team compare to the IG of TI2?  Which team is stronger?

ChuaN: Time is changing, DOTA is also changing.  The current players and teams are certainly stronger than old players and teams.  I really don't think you can compare the two.

Esports Magazine: What is the greatest strength of IG and the biggest weakness of IG?

ChuaN: BurNIng and 430 are amongst the best carry and mid players in the world. They are our strength. Our weakness... maybe is our support play.  Our support play are not as good as the other top supports.

Esports Magazine: After this transfer period, many team will become stronger.  Do you expect the competition to become more fierce?

ChuaN: In actuality, the competition is about the same every year. Every year when it gets to this time, all the teams will make adjustments to present their strongest lined up.

Esports Magazine: While the Chinese teams are going through a transfer period, the Western teams are also making changes to their lined up.  What is your view of the Eastern team V.S. the Western team debate?

ChuaN: The competition between the East and West has always been China is stronger one year and the West is stronger the next year.  Last year China won TI, one can only hope they can defend their titles.

Esports Magazine: Lastly, what would you like to say to the people who support IG and yourself?

ChuaN: I would like to thank everyone who have supported IG and I. I hope I will not disappoint you guys this year.
