BeyondTheSummit to host $50,000 LAN tournament

Another event graces the Dota 2 scene as BeyondTheSummit reveals information on their first ever offline tournament for Dota 2, taking place June 5 to 8.

One of the most popular Dota 2 broadcasting studios, BeyondTheSummit, has announced their intentions on being host to 'The Summit' - their first ever offline Dota 2 tournament. Joining the ranks of other prestigious tournaments, The Summit will be one of the few events to grace the scene prior to the The International Dota 2 Championships 2014. Unlike the big crowd events colouring the summer, The Summit will be a smaller tournament more similar to HomeStory Cup where the players all hang out in a small area.

It will be host to six of the best teams across the globe with Natus Vincere and Team DK receiving direct invites to participate in the LAN finals, based on their outstanding achievements in major tournaments such as StarLadder StarSeries, DreamLeague, WPC-ACE League and G-League, over the course of four months. Alliance were also originally invited to the tournament but they chose to turn it down.

The remaining four slots will be determined via gruesome online qualifiers which will be held across the world. Two slots for North America, one for Europe and one for Asia. The four qualified teams will join the two invited teams at BeyondTheSummit's Studio in Los Angeles, and compete for a prizepool of $50,000. Furthermore, fans will be able to contribute through crowd funding as 25% of the ticket sales will be directed towards the growth of the prizepool.

The main event is set to be held between June 5 - June 8, 2014 whereas, the qualifiers are bound to begin in April and continue until early May. The community will be able to witness their favourite players in action; both as competitors and commentators, that will provide them a platform to directly connect with their fans. Previously, BeyondTheSummit only hosted smaller tournaments like the BTS Weekend Cup as well as the one-vs-one tournament A Fistful of Tangoes, both of which took place over a year ago.

Word of GoD(z)

When asked about how they feel about their upcoming project, David 'GoDz' Parker gave the following response to GosuGamers,

It's incredibly exciting, scary, and fun all at the same time. With 'The Summit' we wanted to do something unique and different for the Dota 2 scene. The major offline event we'll be running is from the comfort and home of our studio. We're confident we can use the space to make it a great success, while providing a more relaxed and fun environment for players to compete in.

The main difference from casting or even organizing online events is going to be the preparation. We have a very small team in LA. Organizing teams coming in, setting up the studio for the teams, and countless other things will be a big project but something we're excited to branch out into.

Furthermore, this will add more pressure to the overly stacked and global tournaments in June, with everyone wanting their slice of the cake. MLG already backed out with their event due to the pressure coming from other events such as DreamLeague, ESL and of course the International. David continues,

The event schedule in June was an initial concern, but not something we see as a problem at this point. The most encouraging factor has been that the players themselves are excited to play the event. When we first proposed our June dates to teams several months ago, a few teams were a bit hesitant, but at this point, DK, Na'Vi, and a host of other teams are eager to attend and are looking at our event as a fantastic opportunity to prepare for TI4 in a relaxing and fun environment.

BeyondTheSummit also made a video related to the announcement, watching it brings thoughts to a certain other similar announcement made recently, by a different organisation.

Additional information pertaining to the qualifiers, tournament structure and participating teams will be announced in the coming days. Meanwhile, stay tuned to GosuGamers for latest updates regarding The Summit.
