Legacy's Cinderella run in the Austin Major continues with a massive upset over tournament favourites Team Vitality.
Brazilian squad Legacy continued their incredible run in the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025 by dominating tournament favourites
Team Vitality, 13-4 in Inferno, in the opening round of Stage 3 on Thursday (12 June). With Legacy's victory, Vitality's historic 30-match win streak has now come to an end.
Vitality were far and away the biggest favourites to claim the championship of the Austin Major. Following their landmark signing of Robin “ropz” Kool in January to become their second star alongside
Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut, Vitality have absolutely dominated the scene and won six straight tournaments and claimed the ESL Grand Slam Season 5 championship.
Not only that, the French squad also built up a streak of 30 consecutive match victories, halfway to the all-time record of 60 set by Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP) all the way back in 2013.
Facing the best team in the world were a Legacy squad that weren't supposed to be in the Austin Major in the first place. They finished fourth in the Major's South American regional qualifier back in April after losing to BESTIA in a decider match for the third and final spot in Stage 1 for the region. However, BESTIA failed to secure visas in time for the Major, leading to Legacy becoming a last-minute replacement.
Legacy didn't waste their chance, overcoming a slow start and surviving all five rounds of Stage 1 to become among the eight teams qualified for Stage 2. They then secured a spot in Stage 3 by taking down fan-favourites FaZe Clan.
While Legacy should have been an easy opponent for Vitality on paper, the community has now come to expect the unexpected in the Austin Major. The tournament has produced plenty of massive upsets so far, with the most noteworthy being star-studded powerhouse Team Falcons failing to make it out of Stage 2 after getting upset by
MIBR. And if there ever was a place where Vitality's streak would end, where else could it be but the opening day of Stage 3 of the Austin Major?
Legacy end Vitality's 30-match win streak to kick off Stage 3
The game started as many expected, with Vitality on the CT side winning the pistol round, only for Legacy to win with a force buy in round two, sparking a fiery streak of eight consecutive round wins. The French squad only managed to win two of the final three rounds of the first half, giving Legacy a commanding 9-3 lead. Despite Vitality's best efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, Legacy didn't give them any room to breathe as the Brazilians bulldozed through the next four rounds to secure the dominant 13-3 win.
Bruno “latto” Rebelatto led the way for Legacy in their massive upset over Vitality with 14 frags and four assists on a map-best eight deaths.
Edward “dumau” Volkmer added 12 frags and two assists on nine deaths while
Lucas “lux” Meneghini pitched in with 11 frags and 10 assists against 10 deaths.
ZywOo had 11 frags and five assists on 10 deaths in the loss for Vitality as the entire team struggled mightily against their opponents' relentless assaults. Shahar “flameZ” Shushan also had 10 frags and four assists on 10 deaths, while ropz only managed eight frags and two assists on eight deaths.
With their victory over Vitality, Legacy move on to the second round of Stage 3 up 1-0, and with their own hot streak of eight consecutive maps won. The Brazilian squad only need to win two more matches to secure a spot in the Austin Major Playoffs.
Despite their loss to Legacy and the end of their win streak, Vitality remain heavy favourites to win the Major. With the pressure of having to maintain their win streak finally off their shoulders, the French squad need to secure three match victories in the next four rounds while avoiding three losses. While their match streak has been broken, Vitality still have the more prestigious streak of six straight tournament victories to maintain.
