Fnatic Academy wins 2016 China TOP

Fnatic Academy secured a 2-0 series victory over MVP Project to win the 2016 edition of China TOP.

The four team event took place over three days, from December 16 - 18, in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, where three Asian teams and one European team competed over a ¥1,000,000 (CNY) prize pool.

Fnatic Academy, a late replacement for the tournament, defeated hometown-team and fan favorites VG.CyberZen, in an intense three-map semi-finals matchup, to move on to the grand finals. The other semi-finals matchup between South Korean powerhouse MVP Project, and FIVE, saw MVP Project take the victory 2-0, after an outstanding performance from Hyun-Pyo “XigN” Lee over the two map matchup.

Due to the limited number of participants in this tournament, the road to the grand finals was rather short. Fnatic Academy and MVP Project kicked off their bout on Mirage, where MVP Project took a 1 round lead (8-7) going into the second half, after a strong terrorist side. However, Fnatic Academy’s Niclas “PlesseN” Plessen took matters into his own hands throughout the second half, helping his team limit MVP Project to only 4 more rounds, leading Fnatic Academy to a 16-12 map victory, and a 1-0 advantage. The second map, Train, saw passionate play from both teams, who after 30 rounds, stood tied at 15-15. However, as overtime began, Fnatic Academy asserted their dominance over MVP Project to win 22-18, and secure the title and subsequent first-place prize purse of $71,870.
