Dota 2 news week in review: August 29th

For those who might have missed the most important news from the past week in the competitive Dota 2 scene, here is a short recap.

Dota 2 Champion League returns with season 8 and open qualifiers

The D2CL has decided to revamp their format for the eighth season of the online tournament by inviting only eight of the 16 teams that will be participating in the tournament. The top two teams from four weekly open qualifiers will be filling the eight remaining slots. Sign-ups for the first open qualifiers, scheduled on the 29th of August, are already open and can be done here.

Aboshamalah, Dark Passage and Bravado Gaming first to qualify for the $1.5 M WESG Main Event LAN

Started on 13th of August with open qualifiers in four sub regions; Turkey, North and West Africa plus South and East Africa and Middle East, the first round of regional WESG regional qualifiers ended this weekend with a LAN held at the luxurious Conrad hotel in Dubai.

Winners of WESG African and Middle East qualifiers

WESG qualifiers will continue next week, starting on the 3rd of September with European and CIS open qualifiers. Major roster changes:

OG down to two members

Formed exactly one year ago by the two lifetime friends Johan 'N0tail' Sundstein and Tal 'Fly' Aizik, under the (monkey) Business tag and then later OG, the European squad that took the competitive scene by storm is once again back to the drawing board, with only Fly and N0tail left to rebuild the roster.

Mushi and Ohaiyo remain the only members of Fnatic

Emerging as one of the stronger teams after The International, Fnatic announced today a major change of their roster, with Yeik 'MidOne' Nai Zheng, Adam '343' Shah and Djardel Jicko 'DJ' Mampusti leaving the team.

Moo out, Blitz and Moon added to Digital Chaos

Moo will be relieved from his offlane role and replaced by David 'MoonMeander' Tan, who just recently experienced a disappointing ending to OG’s two-time Major winning roster. With two Majors under his belt, MoonMeander now makes his way back home, returning to the NA region. DC has also announced that Per Olsson 'Pajkatt' Lille and Chase 'Loomdun' Stearns will no longer be coaching Digital Chaos. Instead, William 'Blitz' Lee will inherit the responsibilities.

Team Secret final roster adds MP, MidOne, Forev

A new season, a new roster. Team Secret finalized their lineup with a bit of SEA flavour, picking up recently departed former MVP players Forev and MP, in addition to former Fnatic player MidOne.

EG Broken: Fear, Zai and Sumail no longer members of the team

Clinton 'Fear' Loomis and Evil Geniuses part ways as the "Old Man" has been dropped from the roster along with Ludwig 'zai' Wåhlberg and Syed Sumail 'SumaiL' Hassan

Without any clear comment as of yet from either Evil Geniuses or himself, it is not certain if Clinton 'Fear' Loomis’s release means that he is indeed retiring or he is just planning for something new.

Back to square one, Loda again to rebuild Alliance

Alliance’s captain Gustav 's4' Magnusson and the team offlaner, Henrik 'AdmiralBulldog' Ahnberg decided to leave their Swedish squad once more to continue their careers elsewhere. As for Joakim 'Akke' Akterhall - who also left the team - it is still uncertain what the his future holds. In their official announcement, Alliance stated that they will make a new post in the following weeks regarding Akke’s plans. The three players departing from Alliance are founding members of the squad, having started their careers together back in 2012 in No Tidehunter, which later became Alliance.
