A look at the future of the Overwatch Universe - Group Editorial

The release of Recall marks the start of what a lot of us hope will be a long string of similar releases. Earlier, Blizzard announced what kind of content they have in the works and we are excited about all of that. But we wanted to share what we are personally really looking forward to.

I absolutely love the fact that Blizzard has decided to bring the Overwatch universe to life through the release of graphical content. While I’m not yet sure I’m going to buy their novels, I will cherish every single second of video content they can produce. The one about Winston, Recall, already had me feeling some feels and let’s not forget the original announcement trailer.

In terms of what I’d like to see told, I’m be very much interested in seeing Zenyatta’s origin story. The concept of Omnics is still very vague to me, and I think especially his creation and early life would teach us a lot about that aspect of the world. Maybe we would even get to see some other Omnics that will eventually be playable.

It is extremely important that Blizzard follows up the Overwatch heroes with the legendary world building they’re known for. When Team Fortress 2 released the Meet the Team videos as well as the comics, they gave life to characters who before were simply just guys with guns; I expect the same will arise from the Blizzard animated shorts.  It is clear that the art and writing departments of Blizzard are in good hands, and I expect to see them weaving CGI magic which tugs at my heart strings throughout Overwatch’s long life.

I think everyone would like origin stories, but all I really want to see is complexity from the characters. Yes, Reaper is a bad guy, but what made him a bad guy? Complex motivations are what elevates storytelling from pulp to classics. Is Bastion actually a bird than can control robots?  And most importantly, what makes Tracer the worst person not only in Overwatch, but in the entire universe?

I'm not a big fan of Blizzard Lore in general. I could really never find the big mass appeal to the Warcraft or Starcraft Universe. But in Blizzard's defense, I guess I'm not really that big into video game lore overall. Yet, I'm somewhat compelled by the way Blizzard handles the storytelling of Overwatch: Completely optional and it's not shoved down your throat. Which in turn made me quite interested. I quite liked "Recall" and I'll certainly watch the upcoming shorts, however, graphical novels and comic shorts aren't really for me. I just hope that Blizzard can stay away from their typical tropes of the "good guy turned bad" and relatively one sided characters. Shades of gray in terms of character development just makes things more interesting for me. So far, we've seen a bit of that in some characters, so I'm interested to see how it all plays out.

On who I would like to see next? Definitely Symmetra. She could really be that type of character who I might enjoy lorewise. I would love to see what her views on the whole conflict are, where she truly stands and why Lucio always seems to go off on her ingame at any chance.

Blizzard has always made the best trailers and cutscenes, so it’s a wonder that it took them this long to finally create some animated shorts. Recall was excellent, on par with just about any other 3D animation I’ve ever seen, so I’m super excited to see where they take this - it’s about damn time. Perhaps we’ll get an animated Overwatch feature film one day?! It is definitely not easy to create longer animations, but I can dream.

A part of the lore that’s interesting to me is Torbjorn’s anti-Omnic demeanor, which is only explored by a few voice lines in-game. What happened to him to give him that opinion? He’s an engineer, so maybe he was involved in the creation of Omnics somehow? Or is he just an asshole?! Other than that, it would be interesting to see some content that’s actually set back when Overwatch was a unified organization, before Reaper went bad, so that we can see exactly what went wrong.

He might be called Reaper, and he might hold weird views, but he isn´t a bad guy! I swear!

I’ve always been a huge fan of the lore in the games I play, so all of the lore in Overwatch has made me giddy. I’ve spent countless hours scraping through every bit of content I can for all the easter eggs, connections, and interesting tidbits I could. I’ll definitely be purchasing every graphic novel they produce, and watching all the videos multiple times over (I’ve probably already watched Recall four times and it always hits me in the feels). The Overwatch world is so interesting, so I can’t wait to see more content from it!

As far as what I would like to see, I want to see more of the dark side of Mercy. For being portrayed as an angelic healing doctor, her subjects don’t seem to happy with her. Reaper with his lines to her saying “You made me this way” and such, and of course Genji hating his new body. I want to see the effects these have had on Mercy, and especially what happened between her and Reaper. To be completely honest though, the world is so compelling they could have a story about the robot actors we hear about in Hollywood and I’m sure it would still be interesting. I can’t wait to hear more of the stories from all members of the cast.

For decades now Blizzard has been building worlds and making people fall in love with them. It’s going to be incredible to see them build another from scratch, with all the tools and experience that they now have. I’ve pretty much already fallen in love with the cast of Overwatch, and for Blizzard to flesh them out with additional content makes me so very happy and hopeful.

There is not one specific thing that I want to see more than the rest, from what we have so far, it’s already so vibrant and interesting, I’m just really looking forward to experiencing more of that world. Some of the heroes I really don’t like in game, like Genji and Bastion, I’m happy to see them lose, a lot, but I still am interested to see more about them alongside the rest of the cast.

It’s difficult not to be excited for the Overwatch future lore content, especially after watching Recall. As expected from Blizzard, the animated short has top-notch quality and –judging from the teasers – so will the graphic novels and comic shorts. I am usually not a big sucker for lore, knowing little more than the basic story and abusing the ‘skip’ button in every game, but Overwatch’s story has drawn me in since the first trailer and made me want to read up on every single detail I could find. Even if my wallet might disagree, I will certainly get my hands on the upcoming graphic novel.

Personally, I would love to learn more about Zarya’s background. Her character and especially the relationship between Omnics and humans, intrigue me. With the Overwatch roster currently only including ‘good’ Omnics, I’d love to learn more about the ‘bad guys’, both on the Omnic and human side of the war.
