GD Studio EU Last Stand Tournament Results

GD Studio dipped their toes into the Overwatch pool for the final tournament of phase one beta

The last Overwatch tournament before the beta goes into hybernation on December 10th featured the best that Europe had to offer in a double elimination bracket.  Cast across several channels, the GD Studio EU Last Stand Tournament went on for nearly ten hours and showcased both established teams and teams looking to make a name for themselves.  All the bracket action can be found below.

To the surprise of no one, EU favorite Melty walked their way to the finals without dropping a single map.  Fnatic seems to have picked up momentum after the ESL Atlantic invitational, and had a strong showing early before dropping a set to team HULKtastic and being relegated to the lower bracket.  However, Fnatic had their chance at revenge, fighting their way through fan favorites MyDong to force a rematch with HULKtastic in the lower bracket finals.

Fnatic took the first map, while HULKtastic fought back to take the second map forcing a decisive game three on rarely seen map, Hollywood.  In an extremely close final map, HULKtastic wasn't able to match Fnatic's stopwatch time.  Fnatic earned a rematch against Melty in the grand finals.

On the first map of the finals, Kings Row, Fnatic took the first point in quick order, but Melty held a very forward defense, holding Fnatic to only the first capture point.  Melty then took the first point nearly instantly, beating Fnatic's time and taking the first map.  Numbani went to Fnatic in a close round, which Fnatic secured on defense by running the controversial D.Va spam strategy.

The third map brought us to Hollywood where Melty elected to start the map on defense.  Much like the first map, King's Row, Melty yielded the first point before mounting a rock solid defense and denying Fnatic the second checkpoint.  A last second push secured both the second point and the third map for Melty to take a 2-1 lead in the best of five.  The fourth map brought us to Dorado with Melty defending.  Melty had been using a strong defense to win maps all tournament, and they stalled Fnatic to a time of 11:16.  But it was Fnatic who stopped Melty from reaching even the first point to force the series to a game five.

The last map was a second run at King's Row with Melty again playing defense first. Fnatic was able to push the payload within feet of the map finish, but was stopped again by Melty's defense.  With Melty on offense, they captured the first point and then sent players extremely far foward to take forward presense on the map.  Fnatic mounted a valiant last defense, but Melty was able to take the second point, the map, the set and the tournament.  Melty clearly cemented themselves as the best EU team in Overwatch.
