Overwatch climbs to #1 on Twitch within minutes of its beta launch

It's not even one hour after Overwatch beta landed on selected players' Battle.net accounts and the game is pushing past 140,000 viewers already.

From FPS veterans, to Blizzard fans, to even shooting games laymen, a lot of people were waiting for Overwatch, Blizzard’s new franchise. Announced at Blizzcon 2014, Overwatch was the company’s initiation in their personal terra incognita – team-based, class-based first person shooters.

Developed from the remains of the Titan MMO engine, Overwatch promised hectic battles across colorful, beautifully drawn battlefields, with unique characters breathing life into this new universe. The words “Beta Fall 2015” got even more people excited but the peak of the hype came with the announcement of the actual beta release date a few weeks ago – October 27th.

Believe it or not, October 27th finally came, and it’s today. The Overwatch beta was released in both NA and Europe and the lucky thousands to get a key are already enjoying the experience. And so have Twitch streamers. In fact, the boom following the long weeks of excitement has torpedoed the game to the very top of the popular streaming platform, beating the numbers of League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Dota 2 and Hearthstone, normally the undisputed kings of the streaming culture. At press time, more than 136,000 people are watching others play Overwatch and it’s not even two hours into the beta.

If you’re thirsty for Overwatch action but can’t play yourself, make sure to check our GosuGamers crew who got their hands on the game. Join us on Twitch.tv/GosuGamers for long, long hours of Blizzard’s new hit game.
