RIOT has waded into the age old debate of whether or not esports is a sport. The League of Legends developers published a new video, titled Our Game this past weekend with the intention of rekindling an “open debate.” Footage of League of Legends tournaments is interspersed with a variety of clips from mainstream media. Many of those news media clips are from esports naysayers, but at least one of them, taken from a BBC broadcast states the case for esports.

Michael "Zechs" Radford is an esports veteran and has been writing about professional gaming for longer than he cares to remember. He currently lives in Leeds and is hoping his upcoming offspring will be talented enough to play esports professionally rather than just write about other people doing it.

Nice move from Riot to save their dying game and create some attention! ;)

LoL originated from a sellout move and a betrayal to the DotA community. They could have made a great statement by mentioning other rival games.
• Charles "FABubbles" Zerkle ,
What about the option of who cares. What does esports gain by being called a sport? It's obvious we don't need the approval, confidence, or support from t-Sports. Esports is great as it is, this discussion is only about whether it's OK for people outside of esports to belittle esports or not.

Exactly! Games are good on their own without needing to be associated with sports. Sports are great, games are great. No debate needed.

Competative gaming is not sport. Chess or Poker are also not sports. They are all great in their own way. Sports are physical games that are slightly less filtered through tools and technology than computer games.
• James "Yared" A ,
Totally agree.
• Kamil "serans" Pałka ,
That's why its called e-sport. I am not calling it sport (it stupid) - i call it e-sport and for me its easy to understand that: e-sport =/= sport. But who cares tbh?
• Roberto "rotesoro" Tesoro ,
so how u call F1?
• Julius "Zipparn" Holmberg ,
I am a big Formula 1 fan. This is a good question, it's a diffucult one to call. Because they very much use technology and tools to apply their skills. And the quality of their tools and technoligy will often determine the winner and results. I have to say that Motorsports are not like traditional by this standard. I feel comfortable saying that Motorsport are in a category of it's own. Like e-sport/cometative computer gaming. Motorsport are not only a competition between the racers, but the engineering teams also compete against each other. Mercedes vs Ferrari, who'll produce the faster car inside the same set of rules. Motorsport is not a traditional sport.
