Riot is rebuilding League of Legends targeting 2027 release

"We're often asked if we're going to make League of Legends 2 someday. And the answer to that has been, and remains, no."

Riot Games has confirmed it is working on a long-term overhaul of League of Legends (LoL) after a report by Bloomberg detailed plans for what could be the biggest update in the game’s history, currently targeted for 2027. Following the report, Riot Games Head of League Studio Andrei “Meddler” Van Roon moved quickly to address speculation, sharing an early developer video on X.

“We were planning to share this video with you in early January as part of the bigger Season Start moment,” Meddler wrote, explaining that the studio decided to bring it forward as rumours gained traction. The video is part of a larger dev update planned after the holiday break and focuses on Riot’s long-term vision for League.

In the post, Meddler confirmed Riot is working on “a brand new around-game client that’s fully integrated with the in-game experience,” alongside a full visual overhaul of Summoner’s Rift, gameplay changes tied to that update, tweaks to Runes and pre-game systems, and a revamped new player experience. He added that Riot will share more details “sometime between MSI and Worlds,” including when in 2027 these updates are expected to land.

The confirmation follows Bloomberg’s report, which states Riot is internally referring to the project as League Next and describes it as the largest update since League of Legends launched in 2009.

What Riot is working on behind the scenes

The video shared by Meddler features him alongside Paul “Pabro” Bellezza, Executive Producer of League of Legends, and directly addresses long-standing community questions. “We’re often asked if we’re going to make League of Legends 2 someday,” Pabro says early on. “And the answer to that has been, and remains, no.” Instead, Riot is focused on continuing to evolve the existing game rather than replacing it.

Meddler explains that while League is usually updated incrementally, some improvements make more sense as part of a larger bundle. “There are some things that do make the most sense as part of a larger bundle of changes,” he says, confirming that the team has been working on bigger updates behind the scenes.

Although Riot is not yet ready to show footage, Pabro notes that “the majority of the League team are now working on” these long-term changes. He also confirms that Summoner’s Rift is being rebuilt with entirely new visuals and some gameplay updates, alongside changes to Runes and pre-game choices. On onboarding, Pabro adds that Riot is overhauling the new player experience so that “once we’re done, it should be the best time ever to get your friends into League.”

Riot has not yet shared exact dates or visuals for the update, with more information expected in future developer updates.
