GSL May Code A Semi Finals Report

That's right. It is the last two matches before the grand final of Code A and four of the best terrans in Korea stepped up to show who is the better candidate to play tomorrow for the prize.

South Korea ST_Bomber vs South Korea SlayerS_Ryung

Game 1 @ Dual Sight

Ryung opened with a proxy Starport just below Bomber's highground cliff and soon his Banshee flew in to reign terror and for a moment things looked good for the SlayerS terran but he suddenly forgot one thing - Bomber had lots of Barracks and hence lots of Marines. With a swift counter, Bomber almost broke in Ryung's base and further delayed his expansion timing, killing SCVs during the transfer.
After Ryung's mid-game tank push also failed and was cleaned by Bomber's forces, he found himself up against the wall - Bomber had a superior army, better tank position and a big mobile marine army that hindered him from taking a fourth, while Bomber was already utilizing a gold expo.
In his last dire moments, Ryung tried to tech up to Battlecruisers but with one lonely heavy hitter he could not push Bomber's sea of tanks and was forced to type GG after the umpteenth insult MULE drop by his opponent.

Game 2 @ Xel'Naga Caverns

I love it when TvT's end around the ten minute mark. Luckily, Ryung seemed to know that quirk of mine and after brilliantly denying Bomber's cloaked Banshees, he packed up all his expo SCVs and all-inned straight into Bomber's natural, stimming and cleaning all resistance.

Game 3 @ Tal'Darim Altar

Bomber once again tried to do a Banshee harass and was denied for a second time by good turret placement. This was a clue for the StarTale terran to sit back and play the style he knows and likes and soon the game was in a heavy macro state with its focal point being Bomber's attempts to deny Ryung's third. Eventually he did but accomplished it by sacrificing the majority of his army and having twice as few tanks as his opponent.
Luckily for him, he was now two bases ahead and managed to remacro fast and hold the counter push. Ryung soon found out that he would not be able to breach Bomber's defences and thus he took a trip to the 6 o'clock base in hopes to equalize the economies. This, however, happened in the worst possible moment as Bomber already had a medivac drop incoming that became a big trouble for Ryung. The SlayerS terran tried to retreat back home but Bomber's main army was also on the way and was there first. Being denied any reinforcements (as well as production capabilities or even access to his own base), Ryung surrendered the third set.

Game 4 @ Crossfire

The fourth set was a quick one. Bomber applied a forward rax pressure while expanding to the gold, managing to gain a huge economic lead right from the start.
By the time Ryung actually managed to deny the gold it was far too late. Bomber already had his natural running and had a 20 to 30 supply lead, growing even larger as time went on. Ryung, however, knew that Crossfire is a dangerous and positional map where high numbers did not count for as much and tried to secure the important highgrounds.
Bomber, though, was smarter than running into occupied positions and used medivacs to move his army around and soon Ryung was forced to reposition himself and it was then that he met with Bomber's overwhelming marine force. Facing a perfect arch, Ryung could not do much but GG out.

South Korea IMMvp vs South Korea MVP_Keen

Game 1 @ Tal'Darim Altar

It is always dangerous to play a terran mirror against Mvp, having in mind the perfect mechanics and micro that Mr. Jeong has. Keen soon experienced that in person as a simple marine pressure from Mvp cost him almost all his marines, several SCVs and stalled the mining at his natural.
Despite this, Keen did not intend to lay down and die and instead tried to even out the battlefield and sent two full medivacs to cause rumble at Mvp's main and that he did, sniping a tech lab before stim finishes. Sadly, though, Mvp did not really need stim to finish the game and with perfect micro climbed Keen's natural, sniped the tank and walked in for the win while simultaneously used SCVs and a small squad of units to deny the drop.

Game 2 @ Xel'Naga Fortress

In another short game (for a TvT that is), Keen opened with the very contradictory build of fast Ghost Academy. And he almost caught Mvp with his pants down, sniping all his marines and breaking the depot wall of the GSL champion.
But then there is quite a big loophole in the Ghost rush. After you run out of snipes a Tank comes out and plunders you to death. After Mvp chased the Ghosts out and secured his own expansion he was so far ahead that he finished the game with a simple push that outnumbered Keen's defences 3:1.
Maybe Keen should have waited for the next patch and play a standard game instead? But I give it to him - it was a brave move and it also produced a nice screenshot as you can see from below.

Game 3 @ Crevasse

Keen aimed to be aggressive right from the start and opened with a beautiful marine aggression that almost cost Mvp a tank but the IM player used SCVs to limit the mobility of the marines and hold the attack.
But Keen was not finished with the aggression and after a couple of minutes moved out to seize Mvp's third but a bad engagement cost him all his army and suddenly the tables were turned and Mvp was now marching to the planetary at his fourth.
Suddenly, another interesting happened. Mvp decided to skip the planetary all along and just march into Keen's main with his marines just at the same time as Keen flew six full medivacs in his opponent's base. A base trade situation was on the way but Mvp had got the worse end of it - his army was both split and far away from home and Keen was thrashing his production facilities. Furthermore, the bad decision to actually turn away and engage Keen's tanks at the natural for no apparent reason put him in an even more awkward position that eventually led to Mvp losing the set.

Game 4 @ Terminus RE

The fourth set was a boring, stagnated TvT up until the middle where an absolute madness was unleashed. The random marine drops was just a prelude to the huge move of Keen when he unloaded several medivacs with bio army in Mvp's main in hope to kill some important tech. Unfortunately, Mvp was prepared and every single unit of Keen was obliterated, setting the newcomer 50 supply behind - a very awkward situation to be in.
Keen's struggle to come back was astonishing, although many would say it was futile. He pushed through the map, attempted drops and tried to get into a good position but Mvp already had a fourth running and his advancement was slow but inevitable. Knowing that he had already lost the economy war, Keen tried one last engagement in the middle of the map and after it failed he surrendered the match to the champion of Seoul.
