GSL Up/Down Day 2 Match Results

Here is a summary of the matches from Day 2 of the GSL Mar. Up and Down matches.

The first game of the day was on Xel'Naga Caverns between ST_Virus and TSL_FruitDealer. Both openings were pretty standard for both players and it was not until the mid-game that things got interesting.ST_Virus had fast expanded and decided to wall off one side of his natural base with 5 Supply Depots. Of course, once FruitDealer saw this, the natural reaction for any Zerg is to create Banelings for a bust. Thinking that his wall was impenetrable, Virus would move out with his Marine and Siege Tank army, leaving very little behind to defend. The wall would fall and so would most of Virus' SCVs after and the game would go to FruitDealer quite easily.

The second game took place on Crevasse with the players spawning in cross positions. Being on the large map that Crevasse is, neither player was aggressive early on. It wasn't until Virus decided to do a timing push that the action began. His force of Marines and Seige Tanks were easily surrounded and flanked as he set up in front of FruitDealer's front natural. A massive stampede of Roaches, Banelings and Zerglings would end the game in FruitDealer's favour as they completely annihilated Virus' army in front of his own natural.

Virus' second chance at Code S was against fellow teammate ST_Ace. Their first match was on the map Terminus RE. Ace tries to secretly pump out Voidrays from a proxy StarGate, however a scouting SCV of Virus scouts this out just as the StarGate finishes building and Virus attempts to take it out. This fails and eventually a macro game ensues. Both players would build up their armies and it was Virus who made a move for the kill. After a large battle between Virus' MMM army and Ace's masterful forcefield placements, Virus would end up on top and take game 1.

The next game was played on Scrap Station. It was a quiet early game for both players as they both chose to fast expand. Virus made the first move of the game with a double Medivac drop into Ace's base. A force of Marauders and a few Marines would take out Ace's main while and another force of Marauders and Marines would run into Ace's natural. This was enough to set Ace's economy very far back and it would be Virus who would eventually emerge as the victor.

The second group of the day began with a match between TSL_Killer and oGsZenio on Metalopolis. The players spawned in close positions and the game would come to a standard ending with a four Warpgate push from Killer and a sad Zenio. Zenio would make an attempt at Roaches, but they were too little too late to defend against the four Warpgate push. The first game would go to Killer.

Crossfire was the next map in the match and Zenio was spared a four Warpgate push from a close position. However, he wasn't spared from the constant Phoenix harass from Killer. At one point Zenio would sneak in a gold base expansion, but it would be taken down before it gave him an effective lead in the game. The game would slowly transition into late game with both players maxing out supply and when that happens, the Zerg just has no hope of winning. Eventually Killer would simply roll over Zenio's forces with High Templars and Colossi including in his large Stalker/Sentry army.

The last match of the day and Zenio's last attempt at Code S was against the Emperor, SlayerSBoxeR. They began their first game on Terminus RE and both players were quick to play a macro game. This turned out to create a very long match between the two. BoxeR would go a mech build and his army of Thors and Hellions would be a strong presence on the map. This however did not stop Zenio from expanding to multiple bases before eclipsing BoxeR's economy. Zenio would even throw down a two-pronged Nydus Worm attack into BoxeR's main and second natural expansion crippling him early on. This would prove effective as Boxer's Thors had a very hard time getting back to defend.

Two is better than one

The second game would be on Shakuras Plateau. Like the game before, Boxer faked a Marine all-in rush before expanding to his natural. This would delay Zenio's expansion and give Boxer a slight lead in the game. Both players had spawned at the bottom of the map so Boxer had decided to break down the destructible rocks in the bottom lane and push his way through. Boxer's decision to go Marine and Siege Tanks worked a lot better as this strategy allowed him to slowly tank push his way to a win. It would seem like Zenio would lose a base and gain one as Boxer pushed him counter-clock wise across the map. Eventually Boxer would catch up to Zenio's expansions and finish him off to take game 2.

The third and final game of the day was played on Xel'Naga caverns. The loser of this match would be going down to Code A. Boxer would have his expansion halted to a stop as Zenio's aggressive Zergling and Baneling army was relentless in their attacks. Zenio took a further step ahead in the game as he secretly took a second expansion at the 9 o'clock position. Boxer would not find this expansion until much later in the mid-game. By the time Boxer had taken his Gold base, Zenio already had his own gold expansion and was mining from 4 bases. From there on Boxer would play catch up, constantly taking out Zenio's expansions in an attempt o even the game. However he would over-extend his army and eventually fall to Zenio's forces.
