Gen.G reverse sweep LYON to become second team to qualify for Worlds 2026 Knockout Stage

LYON will need one more victory to qualify for the next stage.

The second Knockout Stage spot was up for grabs at the League of Legends World Championship 2026, with North America's second seed LYON and the LCK's first seed and tournament favourites Gen.G battling it out in a best-of-three series. In the end, it was Gen.G who took down LYON with a 2-1 reverse sweep to secure their spot in the Knockout Stage.

Both Gen.G and LYON enjoyed dominant runs through the first two rounds of the Swiss Stage. Gen.G took down LPL fourth seed Shanghai Invictus Gaming  in the opening round before overpowering LCK rivals Hanwha Life Esports in a dominant second-round victory.

Meanwhile, LYON defeated LCP first seed Team Secret Whales in their opening match before taking down LEC representatives Karmine Corp to maintain their unbeaten 2-0 record.

Here's how the games went:

LYON overpower Gen.G in the first game

The first game got off to a quiet start, with neither team finding a significant advantage in the early game. However, when Gen.G attempted to secure a Dragon, LYON were quick to punish the LCK first seed. Despite the skirmish, both teams remained relatively even as the game progressed into the mid to late game.

LYON then attempted to sneak a Baron, and although Gen.G tried to contest, they arrived too late to stop the North American team from securing the objective. Another fight broke out around the Dragon pit, where Gen.G once again tried to take down LYON. However, LYON made use of the tools at their disposal to defend themselves and pick up another kill against Gen.G.

Despite these exchanges, the gold difference between the two teams remained relatively even, with both sides finding opportunities to secure objectives across the map and continue farming.

With Kacper “Inspired” Słoma leading LYON's shotcalling, the North American team continued to find opportunities to outmanoeuvre Gen.G around the map. LYON once again managed to secure Baron without losing any members, giving them another opportunity to push further and take more control of the map.

As Gen.G attempted to fight their way back into the game, LYON found an opening to flank their opponents in the mid lane. The North American team took down half of Gen.G's members in the ensuing fight, further solidifying their lead.

Inspired's leadership and LYON's coordinated playmaking became even more apparent as both teams set up for another Dragon. LYON caught Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon  and Jae-Hyuk “Ruler” Park  at the start of the team fight before cleaning up the remaining Gen.G members as they fled from the river.

After 35 minutes, with a 10-4 kill lead, LYON destroyed Gen.G's Nexus to win the first game. The North American team also secured both Barons, three Dragons, and nine turrets throughout the match, reflecting their growing control over the map as the game progressed.

Gen.G fight back to even out the series in the second game

The second game got off to an explosive start, with both teams contesting objectives and engaging in early skirmishes. Gen.G managed to secure the first Dragon, but LYON came out ahead in the ensuing fight, picking up three kills less than five minutes into the game. Another skirmish broke out in the river near the mid lane, where LYON nearly took down Chovy. However, Gen.G managed to turn the fight around, securing two kills in the process.

Gen.G's team composition, which featured multiple crowd control abilities, proved much more challenging for LYON to engage against compared to the first game. The LCK first seed gradually found more opportunities to pick off their North American opponents, allowing them to build a slight lead.

Unwilling to give up, LYON continued to look for ways to get back into the game, although it was an uphill battle against Gen.G's composition. However, a crucial fight in the top lane swung heavily in Gen.G's favour, with Ruler firing on all cylinders and taking down multiple members of LYON. The decisive fight also gave Gen.G the opportunity to secure Baron and further extend their lead.

After 28 minutes, with a 15-8 kill lead, Gen.G destroyed LYON's Nexus to win the second game and even out the series.

Gen.G turn the tables on LYON to secure the reverse sweep

In the third game, both teams went back and forth in contesting objectives, with LYON finding an early lead. The North American team succeeded in bullying Gen.G during the laning phase, making good use of their highly mobile team composition. However, Gen.G refused to back down, slowly finding small victories across the map to keep the gold difference to a minimum.

A fight then broke out in the mid lane, with Gen.G coming out on top and taking the opportunity to secure the Dragon and even out the gold.

Another fight erupted in the jungle as LYON attempted to take down Chovy and the rest of Gen.G. However, Ruler and Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu dealt massive amounts of damage, while Kim “Kiin” Gi-in, armed with his three-item Camille, one-shot Saint. The LCK first seed turned the fight completely in their favour, taking down multiple members of the North American team.

The next team fight proved fatal for LYON, as Gen.G caught them in their own jungle and wiped out the entire team in a clean ace. After a 31-minute encounter, with a 15-7 kill lead, Gen.G marched into LYON's base and destroyed their Nexus to win the third game and secure the series victory.

With their win, Gen.G have become the second team to qualify for the Knockout Stage.

Meanwhile, LYON now hold a 2-1 record in the Swiss Stage and will need to win one more series to qualify for the next stage.
