FunPlus Phoenix edges out Oh My God heading into the LPL Spring Split playoffs

The LPL Spring Split is coming down to the wire.

FunPlus Phoenix closed out a nail-biting 2-1 series against Oh My God, securing their 10th and final spot for the LPL Spring Split playoffs. They lead OMG with a tally of 8-8, who are currently sitting in 11th with a score of 6-8. With that loss, they now face an uphill climb if they want any chance of making it to the playoffs.

The team has been plagued with positive Covid-19 cases, which has since seen their eighth and ninth weeks matches pushed back. This then makes it all the more difficult with the team facing off against FPX while also battling them for the final playoff spot.

The series against FPX was an exciting one with both teams testing the limits of one another. FPX came out swinging in the first game after some great rotations from Kim "Clid" Tae-min. This bought plenty of time for Lin "Lwx" Wei-Xiang on Aphelios to farm freely. From there, they were able to easily snowball their way through OMG's defences and take game one in under half an hour.

The second game, however, swung the other way with OMG taking a firm hold of the match. They had a great team composition comprising of Leona and Viego to name a few, which gave them the edge in team fights. Both Shiyu "cold" Liu and An "Aki" Mao were key in this, pushing their champions to the very limit to secure an important win to tie the series.

But it all went downhill from there as the third game was very much like the first with Lwx bossing on Jinx while Clid was doing Hecarim things around the map. While OMG did put up a valiant fight, it was not enough to stop FPX and eventually had to tap out.

As things stand, FPX is one with their matches in the spring split. Their two matches that were postponed will be happening later today and tomorrow against both LNG Esports and Royal Never Give Up. Both teams have already qualified for the playoffs so it will all come down to OMG and how they prepare for the next two matches.

If they were to win both their games against LNG and RNG, OMG could overtake FPX due to having a higher game win percentage. All they would need is to take both the series and they will be heading to the playoffs, something the org has not done in the past four years.
