Jeff Madsen finished the day with an impressive 216, 925 chips. This figure puts him second overall behind Abe Korotki’s 260, 100 overall chip lead. Though both players could manage to leave the tournament without cashing, this tournament rewards the two Day 1 chipleaders with a $5,000 prize, meaning the two chip leaders are freerolling the rest of the way.
Obtaining the chip lead was no easy task for Madsen, who got involved in a few preflop battles late into the day. Madsen eventually got tangled in an all-out preflop war with one opponent, six-betting his tablemate, forcing him all-in. After about five minutes, the player folded, and Madsen earned the chiplead. Madsen couldn’t resist rubbing salt in the player’s wounds, and tabled a shocking A-T offsuit, much to the shock of the table.
Overall, the day was a great success for both the Borgota and the World Poker Tour. Observers speculated yesterday that this year’s event could break the previous record for the largest event in WPT history, 1,042 entrants. When the dust settled and all the Day 1 entrants were tallied, this year’s event did effortlessly with 1,313 total entries. As the fields combing going into Day 2, that number has withered down to just 786 remaining players. Check back for all the Day 2 action.
