Top Players, Big Swings - What's Going On?

During the last couple weeks there have been quite a few high stakes heads up action involving massive swings amongst the top cash game players on both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. Fans love to see the top players in these grudge matches, but how are the players affected by the massive swings in their bankroll as a result of these ultra aggressive heads-up sessions?

Some of the recent examples:

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom defeated Scott "urnotindangr" Palmer after Blom's 2,500 hand Superstar Showdown, playing four $50/$100 Pot Limit Omaha tables with a mandatory three-bet which actually made the blinds $300/$900. They played 743 hands with Palmer leaving down $619,014 for the night.

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom played Scott "urnotindangr" Palmer again Monday night in a massive 7700 session at $100/$200 PLO winning $495k.

Daniel “jungleman12″ Cates and Patrik Antonius played two tables of $300/$600 Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha for 343 hands with Cates walking away with a $608k profit that helped bring his 2011 winnings to a little over $1 million. During the match there was one $349,788 pot that was ran twice, with Cates being the winner in both hands when his flopped two pair bested the flopped two pair of Antonius.

Norwegian Andreas "skjervoy" Torbergsen played Gus Hansen beating him over 367 hands of $500/$1,000 Cap Pot Limit Omaha around $420,000.

A couple days later Torbergsen took on Gus Hansen and "southside1" in some more $500/$1000 Cap PLO, exiting again with a massive $430,00 win over 450 hands.

Phil Galfond was pleased with all the action running on PokerStars and capitalized to the tune of almost $470k over the roughly 4,700 hands he played.

Last week saw Phil Ivey exact revenge against Kagome Kagome, the Limit Hold'em specialist to the tune of $450k at $3000/$6000 LHE.

Watching these big swings are exciting for the fan, but are they good for the game? Can these top players manage their emotions and bankrolls in the midst of these swings. Only time will tell.
