The focus is shifted on Sophia, one of the supporting characters of the original game.
Asobo Studio has finally unveiled a new trailer for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, a brand-new entry in the A Plague Tale universe that shifts the spotlight away from Amicia and Hugo and onto fan-favourite smuggler Sophia.
Announced during the Xbox Showcase on 8 June and detailed in a post on Xbox Wire by Asobo co-founder and creative director David Dedeine, the upcoming title serves as a standalone story set fifteen years before the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem. Rather than continuing the story of the de Rune siblings, Resonance explores Sophia's past and the events that shaped her into the hardened adventurer players met in Requiem.
According to Dedeine, the team wanted to take the series in a different direction while remaining connected to its established world. "It's anything but a sequel to Requiem: the story of Amicia and Hugo has come to an end," Dedeine explained on Xbox Wire. He added that Asobo wanted to explore "a different type of experience with a familiar character from the universe", describing Sophia as the ideal choice thanks to her personality and background.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy about?
Set on the mysterious Minotaur's Island, Resonance follows a younger Sophia during her days as a member of a plunderer's gang. While searching for answers about her past and attempting to take control of her future, she becomes entangled in secrets tied to myth, fate, and the Macula itself.
The official game description reveals that Sophia's journey will take her through deadly trials, ancient ruins and hostile territory as she attempts to uncover the truth behind a long-buried curse. Along the way, she will be pursued by enemies seeking a mysterious treasure hidden somewhere on the island.
The story will also move between two eras, with players experiencing both Sophia's medieval adventure and events connected to ancient Minoan civilisation. According to the official website, these timelines are intertwined through "the destinies of two heroes linked by fate and the Macula's mysterious legacy."
Who is Sophia in A Plague Tale?
Sophia is a smuggler and ship captain first introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem, where she assists Amicia and Hugo during their journey and helps them navigate dangerous waters. She is a practical and experienced survivor who operates outside the law and relies on skill and instinct rather than ideals.
In Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the story focuses on Sophia’s past, showing her life as a young plunderer and exploring the events that shaped her into the hardened character seen in Requiem.
How does combat change in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?
One of the biggest departures from previous A Plague Tale games appears to be its increased focus on direct combat. Where Amicia largely relied on stealth, tools and desperate survival tactics, Sophia enters the story as an experienced fighter. Dedeine explained on Xbox Wire that "Sophia is a true fighter, lethal with her sword and dagger" and said the studio felt it could not tell her story properly without expanding the combat systems.
At the same time, Asobo is not abandoning the series' trademark tension. While Sophia is more capable in a fight, Dedeine noted that every injury can still prove deadly. The studio has developed what it describes as a combat system that is both demanding and rewarding, requiring players to balance aggression with survival.
The official website further hints at encounters that emphasise agility, timing and precision. Players will need to perfect parries, evade pursuit and use quick reflexes to survive increasingly dangerous confrontations.
What threat is eating on the Minotaur's Island in Resonance: A Plague Tale?
The island itself appears to be more than a simple backdrop. According to the official website, a mysterious presence stalks Sophia throughout her journey. Legends claim only a handful of people have ever returned from the island, and something lurking in its shadows seems capable of tracking every move she makes.
The game's description teases a creature hidden behind the island's mythology, with Sophia eventually uncovering a connection that “will soon resonate with her.” Meanwhile, players will explore ancient structures, solve environmental puzzles and utilise a stolen Minoan sphere capable of manipulating light. The artefact is said to be connected to inventions created by Daedalus and forms a key part of the island's deeper mysteries.
Dedeine also hinted on Xbox Wire that Sophia will be forced to "dive into the macula's myth" as she attempts to understand why its influence feels so personally connected to her journey.
When Is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy releasing?
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is scheduled to launch in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The game will also be available on Game Pass from day one. Players can wishlist the title now through the Xbox Store.
While the de Rune family's story may have reached its conclusion, Asobo appears determined to prove that the world of A Plague Tale still has plenty of secrets left to uncover.
