Following Epic's mass layoffs, one of the developers came forth to express uncertainty of Fortnite’s future “for the remainder of the year and beyond.”
Mass layoffs have become an unfortunate trend, even among major companies in recent times, and the resulting turmoil has affected even one of the most popular games of all time. Epic Games, the studio behind the hit battle royale Fortnite, implemented mass layoffs on 25 March, with over 1,000 staff let go.
Given Fortnite’s strong player base and consistent high-profile collaborations, such a significant downturn comes as a surprise. With such a substantial loss of manpower, concerns have arisen even within the development team, with staff voicing worries about the game’s uncertain future.
A gameplay producer on Fortnite took to X to share his thoughts on the layoffs, calling for support during a difficult period and expressing uncertainty about the game’s roadmap.
“What comes next is very hard and painful,” he wrote. “Our teams will have to pick up the pieces and try to keep moving forward, but we cannot yet fully understand the impact this will have on the game for the remainder of the year and likely beyond.”
The producer, however, pledged to continue “making the best game” for players, acknowledging that there may be some disruption as the team navigates this challenging period.

Why did Fortnite have mass layoffs?
On 24 March, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced that the company would cut around 23% of its workforce in an effort to stabilise financially, stating that it was “spending significantly more than we’re making”, alongside declining Fortnite engagement.
The layoffs and other cost-cutting measures are expected to result in over US$500 million in savings, as part of efforts to bring the company into “a more stable place”.
Additional factors cited include broader industry pressures, including slower growth, reduced player spending, and rising operational costs. He noted that current console sales are lagging behind the previous generation, while games increasingly compete with other forms of entertainment for players’ time.
Although Fortnite remains one of the most consistently updated live-service games, with frequent content drops and collaborations, maintaining that pace has become more challenging, according to Sweeney. This news also follows major changes to Fortnite recently, which includes the controversial change in V-Bucks prices, the shutting down of three Fortnite modes-Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage-and the company's recent focus to the mobile platform.
How did Fortnite developers respond to the layoffs?
Following the layoffs, Fortnite’s gameplay producer expressed deep disappointment at the situation, while promising to continue delivering the best possible experience despite the difficulties. However, he also raised concerns about the game’s future, noting uncertainty over how the layoffs will affect Fortnite’s roadmap for the remainder of the year and beyond, as the team works to “pick up the pieces” and move forward.
Many affected developers also spoke out online, describing feelings of confusion and shock at the sudden layoffs. Some had worked on Fortnite for over a decade, with a number stating they had only recently been recognised for their contributions before being let go.
