Wolfenstein 3 is reportedly in development at MachineGames

MachineGames is reportedly trading Indiana Jones for B.J. Blazkowicz.

Following the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, game developer MachineGames is now reportedly turning back towards another fan favourite franchise: Wolfenstein. This week, Windows Central reported that Wolfenstein 3 was now in development at the studio.

The report was later corroborated by Kotaku, citing its own sources with knowledge on the matter.

Wolfenstein 3 is reportedly now in development, along with a TV show

It looks like a new mainline Wolfenstein game is finally in development, according to both Windows Central and Kotaku. While both outlets opted out of sharing more information on the upcoming sequel, which will likely serve as a sequel to 2017’s Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, Kotaku reported that MachineGames would return to helm the project.

This will be the first entry in the Wolfenstein franchise since 2019’s Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The game was a canonical spin-off set 19 years after the adventures of series protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz in Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, following his two daughters as they embark on a quest to find their missing father.

Reception to Youngblood was decidedly more mixed compared to The New Colossus and its predecessor, Wolfenstein: The New Order, however. Losing B.J. Blazkowicz as a protagonist caused the game to lose its relevance in the timeline, leaving it unclear whether Wolfenstein 3 will choose to follow up on its story–which set up a Nazi resurgence via a Fourth Reich–or act as a prequel instead.

The timing does appear to be right for a new Wolfenstein game, given that a TV series based on the franchise was announced to be in the works last year at Amazon Prime Video. Bethesda has not confirmed any such sequel in the Wolfenstein franchise, however, so we’ll have to wait for an official reveal to see where B.J. Blazkowicz goes next.
