Is 2025 the year Silksong takes off the red nose?
Hollow Knight: Silksong has become both a running gag and a holy grail for years, but Gamescom 2025 might just be the stage where something finally gives… or will it?
With the sequel playable on the show floor this week, Geoff Keighley has only added fuel to the fire by posting a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of himself in wearing a clown nose.
If you’re part of the fandom, you’re probably aware that is a nod to the fan meme about “clowning” for Silksong reveals that never seem to arrive.
Keighley and the clown nose meme
Keighley’s clown nose picture is either a wink, a warning, or both. Since 2021, Silksong fans have turned video game showcases into a ritual of red rubber noses, spamming livestream chats with “Silksong when?”, and wearing disappointment with self-aware humour. Keighley’s tease could be setting the stage for a long-awaited reveal… or simply playing into the community’s running joke.
Signs of life show promise that the game will finally release this year
After years of silence, Team Cherry has begun stirring again in 2025. In January, co-director William Pellen posted a simple photo of a chocolate cake, harmless at first glance, until fans linked it to the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal. Sure enough, Silksong appeared during April’s Nintendo Direct with a 2025 release window.
That was only the start. The game later cropped up in an Xbox Wire blog post, and then later was confirmed to have a playable demo at an Australian museum this September. It also recently resurfaced in a new trailer tied to the reveal of the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds.
And of course, the most exciting news so far had been that Silksong would be playable at Gamescom 2025, along with a bunch of other games. Now, momentum only continues to build. As discovered by keen-eyed Redditors, the game’s soundtrack was also quietly added to the backend of GOG in recent weeks, suggesting preparations are well underway behind the scenes.
Silksong’s hype is undeniable: according to GamesIndustry.biz, five million people have already wishlisted the game on Steam, with many more waiting on other platforms.
And while everything looks promising so far, Keighley’s tweet is a reminder for fans to stay excited, but not to expect too much until the reveals are in front of them, clown noses at the ready as Gamescom Opening Night Live approaches.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to launch during the 2025 holiday season across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on release day.
