Surely, with all of these recent breadcrumbs, Silksong is finally releasing this year... right?
Hollow Knight: Silksong is officially slated for release in 2025, Microsoft confirms. This update came during Sunday’s Xbox Games Showcase, where the game featured in a trailer tied to the reveal of two new handheld gaming devices: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
Sarah Bond, the current president of Xbox, confirmed that Silksong will be playable at the launch of those devices, which are both expected to arrive during the 2025 holiday season. This is the second time a major gaming company has confirmed the game’s release year, with Hollow Knight also showing up at Nintendo Direct back in April with the same release year. No specific date was mentioned, so this is the clearest indication yet of when players can expect the sequel to arrive.
The game is set to launch across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on release day.
Fresh signs of life give some hope to fans
Announced back in February 2019, Silksong has been through a long and quiet development cycle. Originally planned as a DLC expansion for the critically-acclaimed Hollow Knight, it evolved into a full standalone sequel starring Hornet–a key character from the original game known for her speed and agility.
Set in a new kingdom “haunted by silk and song,” Silksong promises more than 150 new enemies and a fresh, acrobatic moveset for Hornet, creating a distinct style of movement and combat.
Although the game was first announced six years ago, the devs barely shared any updates in the past. But the game showed signs of life early in January when Team Cherry co-director William Pellen posted a photo of a chocolate cake, with the anniversary date of the photo coinciding with the Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2 in April–the date in which the game made a quick appearance on Nintendo Direct’s showcase this year.
Team Cherry also announced early in May that Silksong will be playable at an Australian museum in September. Last week, activity on SteamDB showed that Silksong’s backend package had been updated for the first time in over a year, which is a sign that the game might be inching closer to release. With Microsoft now offering a 2025 window and more gaming events on the horizon, fans are watching closely for the next official update.
Fans are definitely excited to see more signs of life from Silksong, but after years of waiting, most are taking the news with a pinch of salt. The 2025 window sounds promising, but until there's a firm date and the game actually launches, seeing is believing.
