Hollow Knight Silksong will be playable this September at an Australian museum

Good news for Hollow Knight fans! Team Cherry’s highly-anticipated Metroidvania sequel, Hollow Knight Silksong, will be playable on 18 September 2025…in an Australian museum, that is.

If you’re a Hollow Knight fan, you might have had a mini heart-attack reading the headline. After all, it’s been six long years since the sequel to the critically-acclaimed classic was announced. However, those in Australia can play the game at Australia’s National Museum of Screen Culture (ACMI) from 18 September onwards, according to a report by IGN.

Silksong will be available to play at the Melbourne Museum during the Game Worlds exhibition, which will also feature displays exploring the game's design and artistic direction.

CMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell said that "since Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced in 2019, it has remained one of the most eagerly awaited indie games in the world" and that they are "delighted to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made title as a centrepiece of Game Worlds this September."

They explained that "from the hundreds of sprites that bring Hornet’s various movements and attacks to life, to the logic underpinning the game’s most demanding boss encounters – and of course, the opportunity to play the game in-gallery – the Silksong displays offer an in-depth exploration of the game’s artistic direction and design." They added, "We’re incredibly grateful to Team Cherry for entrusting us with their work, and can’t wait to share it with visitors."

As part of the announcement, ACMI unveiled a sprite sheet from Silksong, as first reported by IGN, which is one of several design elements from the game that will be featured in the Game Worlds exhibition.

The spread received positive feedback from fans, but didn’t escape eagle-eyed Redditors that spotted Hornet without her dress (or coat apparently?) and holding the said article of clothing in one arm, and poking fun at the discovery.

The big question remains: When will Silksong release?

However, the Adelaide-based indie game developers have yet to confirm the game’s release date. Since confirming its release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, fans are still waiting and speculating, since small updates sprinkled throughout April continue to pop up via the game’s Nintendo and Steam store pages.

Since the game has been confirmed to be playable in ACMI this September, some are speculating that the game will release a month or so before then. However, it’s also possible that the version in ACMI is a preview version, and that the full game might be released in the fourth quarter of the year.

The safest answer, once again, is that it’s only real when it’s finally available for purchase and download on PC via Steam, as well as the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox and more.
