Was Claptrap silent, or was he silenced?
Borderlands is officially shutting Claptrap up. Gearbox Software’s upcoming looter-shooter sequel Borderlands 4 will include a slider that allows players to specifically adjust the volume of the robot Claptrap, and even mute him. Claptrap has appeared in every entry of the Borderlands franchise, and acts as its series mascot–though his brand of comic relief has proven divisive, as some players find him plain irritating.
Borderlands 4 will let you mute Claptrap
The Borderlands franchise mascot Claptrap is a certified yapper, which is why the newest installment in the franchise, Borderlands 4, will let players mute the robot. Fans recently discovered that the sequel has a volume slider specifically for Calptrap, allowing players to slide his speaking volume up and down according to their preference.
The game’s narrative director Sam Winkler chimed in to hint that the feature might even be acknowledged by characters in-game, saying that “I wrote some lines just for this feature and it includes maybe the dumbest most niche reference to a certain terrible accent in a certain classic immersive sim.”
He also joked that “I pitched that you should be able to put him from 0% to 200% but i think the government said no.” It’s worth noting that, technically speaking, since there are volume sliders for all other forms of in-game audio, this new slider also makes it possible for players to mute everything in the game except for Claptrap. Do with that information what you will.
Borderlands 4 launches on 12 September on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 release is also planned.
