Amazon's first teaser for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power showcases its massive budget

Amazon released a new trailer for its Lord of the Rings TV show during the Super Bowl, revealing the first look at Galadriel, Elrond and more in action.

Amazon’s first teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has finally arrived in all its big-budget glory. The series acts as a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, following the creation of the 20 rings of power and Sauron’s ascent to full-fledged villainy.

You can watch the teaser below:

Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power expands upon the Second Age of Middle-earth. At this point, Middle-earth is in an era of relative peace after a great evil has been seemingly wiped out. According to J.R.R. Tolkien's stories and appendices, that great evil was the first Dark Lord Morgoth, who vanished alongside his lieutenant Sauron. As fans very well know, Sauron re-enters the fray in a big way later on.

Middle-earth is a massive place filled with multiple races, biomes and populated strongholds. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be surprising that the show follows an equally huge cast of 22 characters scattered across these locations, from the depths of the Misty Mountains to the elven forests of Lindon and island kingdom of Numenor. In just this teaser alone, we see snowy mountains, dark forests, underground mines and glimmering cities. So far, so Lord of the Rings.

The prequel also sees the return of a much younger Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Galadriel (Morfydd Clarke), the latter of whom can be seen ice-climbing, boat-sailing and horse-riding in this teaser. It looks like Galadriel will be adventuring across Middle-earth this season, though her exact intentions are unknown.

Amazon will reportedly spend more than US$1 billion bringing The Rings of Power to life on its streaming service, having already committed to multiple seasons of the series. The eight-episode first season will hit Prime Video on 2 September, with new episodes to follow on a weekly basis.
