Nigma Galaxy bow out of TI 2026 in Top 6 as BoomBoys advance to the final four.
Fan-favourites
Nigma Galaxy have been eliminated from The International (TI) 2026 after a narrow lower bracket defeat to
BoomBoys (aka BetBoom Team), bringing their remarkable Cinderella run in this year's world championship tournament to an end.
Nigma Galaxy bow out of TI 2026 in 5th-6th place, earning an estimated US$163,565 in winnings. It marks a repeat of their stunning run at the previous TI which also ended in a Top 6 finish for the team. They once again placed among the heavy favourites despite entering the tournament as one of the dark horses.
It is a particularly sentimental ending for Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan, who has previously hinted at retirement and once again expressed so in the post-match interview, stating this event would be his last. The veteran won his debut TI in 2015 at just 16 years old, and remains the youngest player to have ever lifted the Aegis of Champions.
With the 2-1 victory, BoomBoys continue their quest for the Aegis of Champions through the lower bracket, matching earlier expectations as the CIS powerhouse join the elite teams in the final four. While a Top 4 finish is secured, BoomBoys will crave for more as they eye a first TI title for both the players and the organisation. They will clash with
Team Spirit in the lower bracket semifinal for a step closer to the championship's finals.
Nigma Galaxy wrap up a Top 6 performance at TI 2026
TI 2026 has been filled with the highest level of Dota 2 and nail-biting storylines, but Nigma Galaxy’s journey has perhaps captured the most attention, as they have punched above their weight to reach the tournament’s final six.
It is a remarkable achievement given Nigma’s barren season throughout the majority of the 2025-2026 competitive season, which even saw mainstay SumaiL benched for three months. But ahead of TI, Nigma regrouped, bringing back the TI 2015 champion as a carry while bringing in Ukrainian talent Artem “Lorenof” Melnick to take over the mid lane.
The roster changes earned them a TI qualification through the European region and a Top 8 finish at the Dota 2 Esports World Cup 2026. However, even those results could not have prepared the scene for their ability to truly match the tournament’s most dominant teams.
Nigma Galaxy started their TI 2026 run with a series loss against
Iron Wing in the Group Stage, but it would remain their only defeat for some time, as the team mounted four consecutive wins, clean-sweeping
OG,
LGD Gaming,
Vici Gaming and
Team Spirit. Their 4-1 record propelled them into the Top 3 of the Group Stage and earned them a direct berth in the Playoffs.
The team continued to surprise with a 2-1 comeback against defending champions
Team Falcons in the opening Playoff series, but their run eventually hit a wall as they narrowly fell to
Team Yandex, dropping into the lower bracket and straight into the path of the formidable BoomBoys. Another hard-fought defeat ultimately brought Nigma Galaxy’s fairytale journey to an end, albeit with a commendable Top 6 finish.
BoomBoys recover in the long run at TI 2026
The CIS talent-packed BoomBoys entered TI 2026 among the favourites, only overshadowed by
TEAM VISION and
Team Yandex, who had established themselves as the leading contenders at the world championship.
BoomBoys had enjoyed an impressive year leading into TI, posting consistent and dominant results throughout the 2025-2026 competitive season. The team finished on the podium five times, including a victory at PGL Wallachia Season 8 and a runner-up finish at the Dota 2 Esports World Cup. Those results placed considerable expectations on BoomBoys heading into TI 2026, with a podium finish expected from the side.
Despite a rocky start, BoomBoys would make a smooth recovery in the latter stages of TI 2026. The team posted a low seed in the Group Stage with a 2-3 record, winning only against OG and Iron Wing while losing to TEAM VISION,
Aurora Gaming, and Team Falcons.
This forced the favourites to claw their way into the Playoffs through the Elimination Round, where they exacted revenge against Aurora Gaming. The team underwent a sour start to their Playoff run, unfortunately drawing tournament behemoths TEAM VISION. Unable to figure them out once again, BoomBoys dropped into the lower bracket.
BoomBoys then embarked on a lengthy fight there, first eliminating Iron Wing and now overcoming Nigma Galaxy to reach the lower bracket semifinal. They will need to fend off a surging Team Spirit next, however, with the latter riding high after stomping
Team Liquid out of the tournament.
What is The International 2026?
TI 2026 will be this year's iteration of Dota 2's annual world championship tournament, taking place in August in Shanghai, China. As with previous iterations of the tournament, TI 2026 will feature a total of 16 teams that earn their spots in the tournament by receiving direct invites or earning slots through regional qualifiers.
The list of directly-invited teams to TI 2026 include
Aurora Gaming,
BoomBoys (aka BetBoom Team),
Team Falcons,
Team Liquid,
Iron Wing (aka 1w Team),
Xtreme Gaming, and
Team Yandex. Meanwhile, the teams that earned their spots through the regional qualifiers include European qualifier winners
Team Spirit,
TEAM VISION (aka PARIVISION),
HULIGANI, and
Nigma Galaxy, North American qualifier winner
GamerLegion, Southeast Asian qualifier winner
OG, South American qualifier winner
LGD Gaming, as well as Chinese qualifier winners
Vici Gaming and
Team Resilience.
TI 2026's main event will be hosted in the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. Valve first announced that Shanghai will host TI 2026 during last year's world championship tournament, where Team Falcons claimed the Aegis of Champions after defeating China's Xtreme Gaming in the five-game grand finals.
This will mark the second time that Shanghai will host TI after TI 2019, where Western Europe's OG became the first-ever two-time TI champions after defeating Team Liquid in four games to claim the grand prize of US$15.6 million, out of the US$34.3 million prize pool.
TI 2026 will be split into two phases: the ‘Road to The International’ and ‘The International’ main event. The Road to The International will be a Swiss-style Group Stage from 13 to 16 August, where the 16 teams will be cut down to the final eight that will play in the game's biggest stage from 20 to 23 August in Shanghai's Oriental Sports Center.
TI 2026's prize pool follows that of previous editions, with a US$1.6 million base prize pool that will then be boosted through sales of the TI 2026 Compendium.
