Team Liquid, Gaimin Gladiators and Tundra Esports secure their ticket to the Berlin Major

What was looking like a chaotic league table in the Western European DPC Division I got simplified after Team Liquid’s victory over Monaspa.

A day ago, there loomed the possibility of a seven way tiebreaker in the Western European DPC League after a series of unexpected results. But after the penultimate round of games, there appears to be a lot more clarity, at least at the top of the table. Team Liquid, Gaimin Gladiators and Tundra Esports have cemented their place at the Berlin Major with one set of matches remaining.

The chaos in the league was caused because of the above expectations performances of the two promoted teams, Ooredoo Thunders and Monaspa. Both these teams have played their hearts out and caused a lot of upsets in the Spring Tour.

Heading into the penultimate set of games, Team Liquid and Gaimin Gladiators led the league with a score of 5-1, and a win for them would secure their place in the second DPC Major of the season. But TI11 champions Tundra Esports had other ideas as they took down Gaimin Gladiators 2-0 to get their score up to 4-2. Team Liquid on the other hand managed to win 2-0 against Monaspa to get to a score of 6-1 and confirm their qualification.

But earlier in the day, Ooredoo Thunders stunned Entity 2-0 (at this point, is it even that big a shock?), which meant GG secured their qualification thanks to Liquid defeating Monaspa. A bit confusing, isn’t it?

The way it currently stands is that Ooredoo Thunders have it all in their hands to secure the final spot for the Berlin Major. Of the five remaining teams, they are the only ones with a score of 3-3, while the other four are at 2-4. If OT defeat Team Liquid in their final series, they will have done the unthinkable of coming from Division II and securing a place at the DPC Major in the toughest region in Dota 2. If they don’t, it is bound to trigger some tiebreakers for the last major spot as well as the two relegation spots.

Irrespective of what happens, this has been one of the closest tours WEU has witnessed, and hopefully we get some tough games in the last round of matches.
