MPGL is currently one of the biggest events in South East Asia, where multiple teams earn a spot throughout the year playing multiple instances and tournaments.
The MPGL SEA groups have been drawn and a total fourteen teams will lock horns in a three day-event for to settle the champion of this year. Throughout the year, several monthly tournaments have been hosted to allow teams to acquire points in order to either qualify directly into the main event in the Philippines, or at least to one of the pre-qualifiers leadijng up to it. The two days prior to today had the very last qualifiers running, which eventually settled, paving way for the group stage.
The format of the event is a bit ambitious and is not completely unlike the one used at The International 4 during July, albeit it is not exactly the same. The initial groupstage consist of two groups with seven teams in each. Once this phase is over, the top two teams from each group will advance to the a special winners bracket while the rest will have to earn a spot higher or lower in a bubble race bracket, depending on where in the group they end. There is one bubble race for each rank 3-7 of each group. The bubble race matches are best of one, and the teams coming out as winners of each bubble race will then join the winners bracket where the four teams coming there straight from the groups already played one match. The bubble race winner will then face the loser of the first winners match. Four of these teams move on to the finals bracket, a single elimination story played on Sunday.
The base prize pool of the event is $22,000 USD and can be increased through various contributions.
