Corsair Asia Cup announced, at least ten Asian countries represented

A new Asian tournament has been announced, and it will feature at least eight invited teams and nine different regional qualifiers. The registration for this $3,000 prize pool tournament is currently ongoing.

While this tournament is still SEA-centric, the tournament also opened its doors to various Asian regions. This is evident on the list of their invited teams, which is composed of several of today's most prominent SEA teams along with two Korean and one Chinese team.

The invited teams are:

  • Korea MVP.Phoenix
  • Malaysia Titan
  • Singapore Scythe.SG
  • Malaysia Orange eSports
  • Malaysia Arrow Gaming
  • Philippines Mineski
  • United States Zephyr
  • China HGT

China's LGD has also expressed their interest in the competition, but they have yet to confirm because of concerns regarding the game server. Negotiations are currently ongoing between them and the organizers.

Aside from having the invited teams, the tournament will also open up slots for qualifier winners. There are nine different regional qualifiers, and the schedule of the qualifiers is as follows:

  • 21-24 April: Taiwan Taiwan, Indonesia Indonesia, Australia Australia / New Zealand New Zealand, Vietnam Vietnam, Philippines Philippines
  • 23-25 April: Malaysia Malaysia, Singapore Singapore, Thailand Thailand
  • 26-27 April: Rest of Asia

All qualifiers will be played in a single-elimination tournament. One team will advance from each qualifier, except for the Australian and Indonesian qualifiers wherein two teams each will move through. With an invite for Korean and Chinese teams, it is rather surprising that the organizers didn't allot a separate qualifier for these regions.

An additional qualifier slot will be given in case LGD decides to not participate. Registration is currently open, and will close on 18 April.

The teams advancing from the qualifiers will join the invited teams to make a pool of twenty. These teams will be divided into four groups of five, wherein there will be a best-of-two single round-robin stage. The top two teams per group will advance into the best-of-three, single elimination playoffs. The whole main event is tabbed to run from 28 April to 10 May.

The games will be played in the Singaporean server, except for games involving the Chinese team/s. The games will be played in alternate servers on the first two games, and there will be a coin toss in the third game if necessary.

The Champion will receive $1,500, while the second and third place team $1,000 and $500 respectively. The $3,000 cash prize pool is not far behind the ACG best-of-the-best invitational, who had a $3,500 prize pool and is the best-paying Southeast Asian tournament so far this year. Aside from the cash, hardware will also be given away to the top three teams.

"Our main objective is to increase competition in SEA and to bring SEA, Korea, Oceania and China in one tournament", said head organizer Wilson Ong when asked about the tournament.

The tournament also plans to offer DotaTV tickets for fans wishing to spectate the games, but it is still being processed at the moment.
